Knee hurting and issues post TKR continue....please help

Posted by cindymattern @cindymattern, Jan 27, 2023

I am at 16 weeks and the top of my knee feels odd. There are times it is really sore and hurts and when I walk I do not want to bend it. I am much more aware of it now for some reason. Could this be because everything is waking up (nerves, tendons etc)? My ROM is still 120 or so and I can ride my recumbent bike and it doesn't bother me at all. By mid afternoon my leg is pretty much done for the day. I also am waking up at night with my leg feeling really sore and stiff and I was sleeping through the night. The triage nurse told me that my knee will hurt if I do too much and I should ice anytime I am sitting or at rest. Is that correct as I'd be icing 3-4 hours a day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Cindy, I have moved your new discussion posts into one discussion so members can follow your progress. It sounds like you're experience the literal and proverbial one step forward, 2 steps back. In your last post, it seems like progress is starting to show with increase steps and improved range of motion. Good for you.

I think you might appreciate reading this discussion that @artscaping started a while back:

I encourage you to continue to focus on what you can do and be proud of the small steps to success. Are you still working with a physiotherapist?

I was dismissed at 3 months from PT and am at almost 6 months so I have nobody to bounce questions off. My surgeon now is no help at all.

My surgeon basically said your x-ray is fine, some people always have issues (not told this before surgery as well as other things). I walk 5-7000 steps and I do my exercises and ride the bike 2x a week. Yet after exercising I can't do anything for another 2-3 days except for daily things and walking due to my leg being so sore and hurting. My ROM is 115/125 with band so that is good. Am I where I should be for 6 months? I am so tired of this and just want things to get back to normal. I'm using dicoofenac gel and Ben Gay as well as taking Tylenol (occasional Tylenol 3). Weaning off Gabapentin. I'd love any suggestions that may help.

Thanks.... have not tried MFR but thought about it. I still have that annoying clicking and am trying to exercise more on the bike and doing the pulls back to my butt to stretch it out and increase the ROM. Maybe I've reached where I am going to be. Not sure. Helpfully the muscle tightness gets better over time. I'm using Diclofenac Gel 1% and Ben Gay 3x a day that that helps tremendously. Oral NSaids I can't take.

What is MFR for scar tissue? I am 14 weeks post TKR (my first one was 5 years ago) I am having so much lateral pain, have been told I have a IT Band Syndrome, plus surgeon says I have so much scar tissue. I can survive during the day, and work, I am always aware of my knee (tightness/ band like around it) but at night, I am soooooo miserable. I am still taking Tramadol at 4 am, take Lorazepam 2 mg to get to sleep but I am up and down all night. My bend is 120; extension is still -12. after PT I too can barely walk... I am doing around 3000 steps a day.

Myofascial release here Is a website where you can find a therapist in your area…mfr helps reduce inflammation , helps break up little fibers that form scar tissue ….there is also information on that website that will explain how it works…

Consider trying Diclofenac 8% Ointment for the leg & foot pain. I’m 5 wks post TKR. Into second wk I started having pain in lower leg, top & sole of foot & around ankle. Using the ointment took care of the pain. Continued doing exercises etc. issue largely resolved now unless I overdo it but ointment & rest takes care of it. I have no doubt mine was related to surgery for some reason but glad it’s improving as healing continues.

Diclofenac 8% is by prescription, correct? I think the OTC stuff is 1%. Thanks!

Just pure patience and don’t stop what you are now doing.
I just finished my second TKR after 30 months and I’m
right back to where you are again, but realize it simply takes
patience and THE INITIATIVE not to quit what you are doing.
It does eventually come back to normal. Just a little different timing for each of us.
