Prolia Use Followed by Bisphosphonate

Posted by leeosteo @leeosteo, Mar 3, 2023

Has anyone used Prolia for extended period e.g., 4+ years and immediately followed by a bisphosphonate e.g., Fosamax? How long were you on follow on bisphosphonate and did you save all bone gain from this med combo?

I understand you loose all Prolia bone gain almost immediately after stopping Prolia. My doctor has recommended Prolia for up to 10 years followed by Fosamax. I'm just wondering if I would be wasting 10 years using a med combo that would leave me where I started.

I visited my endocrinologist this week to come up with a plan. I believe that Prolia did help improve my spine (osteoporosis to osteopenia) after five injections, 2 1/2 years. I want to stop taking it because I feel it’s the cause of my hair loss. My doctor is not certain about this and of course I can’t be 100% positive, but I am not the only one who has experienced this issue.

Because I have GI issues and had breast cancer three years ago, she is recommending Evista (or Reclast). Evista has potential benefit of possibility warding off breast cancer. Fosomax was mentioned but she wanted approval from my GI doctor because there can be side effects, so I will just skip that one. Please do your own research here and don’t jump to Evista.

I think I’m going with Evista and will report back when I have something worthwhile to share.

Best wishes to all, Cindy

Thank you for the link. I'm going to be transitioning to Reclast after Prolia in May. My aunt has been on Reclast for years so I'm not too worried about it. I just want to keep the gains I've gotten from Prolia (7 years, and now back in the normal for my age range).
