Post op 4 weeks from fundoplication- intense pain

Posted by georgieesc @georgieesc, Mar 2, 2023

Hello all,
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the symptoms I am experiencing.
I am 27 and I had my operation 4 weeks ago for my GERD. I had to stay in 8 days due to not being able to eat or drink + infection.
I’m still unable to eat anything more than soup without extreme pain.
After I eat or drink, I get this intense pain in my stomach which radiates into my back and into my neck and jaw, almost feels like a spasm and I could vomit (if possible) from the pain.
I have an outpatient follow up with my surgeon in a couple of weeks, but I don’t know how much longer I can cope with this.

When I had my fundoplication done, it took months for me to stop having pain when drinking or eating. It was a very slow recovery for me. I still have swallowing issues but I do think some of it is because of my GERD. I had mine done twenty years ago. I'm glad I did it but there are long term side effects that I have had to deal with. I encourage you to be patient. The more you exercise the esophagus and stretch out that wrap, the better it gets. At least for me, I don't have to deal with my hiatal hernia anymore. Woohoo. God bless. I hope your symptoms improve soon.
