why Mayo?

Hi @jrvegan, Welcome to Mayo Connect. Why Mayo? I’m a bit biased because I am a continuing patient with Mayo-Rochester for the past 4 years. I can’t imagine going anywhere else when there is a situation that calls for complicated medical care. Mayo is known for their collaborative team approach to health care.

It is true about acquiring a medical team while at Mayo depending on the treatment necessary. My experience didn’t involve your particular needs with urology, nephrology and endocrinology. But during my lengthy journey with a bone marrow transplant, some issues presented themselves and they were quite complicated. I now have several specialists on my medical team. Each one was quickly brought into the picture in an incredibly short time when my transplant doctor requested. They’d all gather in the hospital room to discuss treatment and options with me while I required critical care. They also met with teams every morning before rounds to brief each other and discuss ongoing treatments. On my team I have my transplant doctor and his huge team, 2 neurologists, a heptologist, allergist, ophthalmologist, pharmacists, etc,, and the list goes on. They strategized and worked through my situation and arrived at a solution quickly.

You have to realize that doctors at Mayo are at the top of their field and respected world-wide. There is no chest-thumping or one-up-man-ship when they are working with patients. These doctors work together as a cohesive unit to provide the best medical treatment and care possible. During all of my visits, and there have been well over 100, I have never once felt rushed or dismissed by any of the doctors, nurse practitioners, nursing staff or any of the ancillary members who make that clinic run smoothly and efficiently.

So why Mayo? I sound like a walking advertisement. But I say, why not? What do you have to lose by being seen by top specialists in the world?
If you’d like to request an appointment for a second opinion here is a link to their homepage. You’ll see numbers for each of the 3 campuses that would be most convenient for to visit.
