I stopped taking my birth control pill in April 2021 and notice a significant amount of hair loss when I am washing my hair. can anyone else out there relate to this?

Thankyou so much for your reply and for providing the link and your support. I feel so isolated and distressed as this has been such a shock for me and yes panic. I never knew this could happen and of those friends I have, they have not experienced this situation. I don't look forward to washing my hair in the shower. What was a relaxing experience is now a time I don't look forward to.
I did see my doctor this week and she was not helpful. She said she had never heard of this before and my effect of losing my hair after stopping my BC was the worst she has ever heard of. Needless to say, I know she will not be helpful in this matter.
I have just started with a supplement called Nutrafol.
I have also started CollagenPlus drops by Lorna Vanderhaeghhe. I just purchased Ducray Creastim and received Anaphase shampoo samples. I am trying these products. All of this is based on my own research and I am hoping these products help. I have also ordered a couple of other shampoos and conditioners from companies to see what works best. I do appreciate you replying. It just seems there is little support out there or knowledge about this topic.

I am experiencing alot of hair loss and hair shedding. Especially when I wash my hair or brush it out. Its coming out in handfuls. I have serious lung issues and tested positive for covid last January. Are any of the above products you mentioned helping? If so which ones are helping the most? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have dealt with hair loss for over 20 years starting with post pregnancy . I use Rogain like product.. I prefer the liquid as opposed to the foam, it is a fraction of the price of the foam and you get better skin contact as well., also the foam can make your hair feel funky. I put the liquid on my scalp and rub it into my scalp. It helps stopping the hair loss and helps with regrowth. I take supplements as well. I work with a leading Dermatologist in San Francisco. I have a thyroid disorder. If you are on any prescription drugs, I suggest looking for side effects such as hair loss. Talking to your pharmacist about alternative meds and then taking that information to your doctor could really help. Many primary doctors I have worked with appreciate the information. Most primary physicians are really challenged with time restraints, so research becomes challenging as primary physicians have to treat large range of illnesses.
I need to be proactive with my health all the time. I wish you success!

I had some devastating hair loss on the top of my head. I was really afraid of getting bald there. I went to a dermatologist, and he prescribed an a bit oily substance compounded of minoxidil and dutasteride to be applied every night to the areas of hair loss. Now, about 5 years later, I have very dense hair, and my beautician feels I have more hair than most women in my age group.
It was never clear why I had this hair loss to start with.

Over the years I've had periods of serious shedding and I never could figure out why. Finally 2 years ago I realized what was causing it. I have eczema and would get a powerful corticosteroid shot, Kenalog 40 annually to help with itching and burning. About 2 months after getting this shot the hair loss would start, but never connected the dots. I stopped needing this shot about 5 years ago.
Then 2 years ago I got knee injections, Zilretta, amazing, pelletized time released local steroid which took away every bit of pain in my knees and just as advertised it would work for 3 months and 3 months to the day the pain returned. About 2 months after this injection handfuls of hair came out!!! This continued for about 3 more months, especially at my hairline where I could see my scalp. I was forced to have my hair cut for bangs. I read the side effects and hair loss was one of them. I had no idea they meant this much hair loss. I put up with the pain in my knees, my hair has regrown, but it seems my hair line is still thinner, but I don't have to wear bangs.

@daisymiq Hair loss must be so difficult to deal with. Is yours new or has it been awhile? I’m going to ask the moderators to move your question to the discussion on Women’s Health where it may gain more attention.
What have your doctors said about the hair loss?

My hair loss started a little bit, which was unnoticeable, before I had chemo in the year 2012 at age 66. I lost all of my hair at that time but it grew back thinner. It has progressively gotten worse with about 20 to 30 strands of hair shedding each time I wash my hair. I was diagnosed with Androgenetiic Alopecia and my dermatologist recommended applying Rogaine for Men (5% foam). Apparently, once hair starts to grow, it will stay for as long as it is used. However, the hair will begin to fall out again a few months later when the application is stopped. I am concerned about the long-term side effects of Rogaine. I’m wondering if there is anyone in the group who has used natural remedies over medical interventions to treat this condition.

I've found liquid Rogain helpful. You can get it on Amazon under the Kirkland brand, 6 containers for around $60...good luck !

My doctor told me to take my already prescribed Levothyroxine completely by itself instead of with any other meds or food. Kinda hard to do since I take so many meds. But I accomplished this by setting my morning alarm early to accommodate this, and my hair loss improved. But I only had light-moderate loss to begin with. Now I don’t have to set the alarm, I just take it anytime I awaken after 3am.
