Newly diagnosed - Thoughts about drinking alcohol

Posted by ringmastr1 @ringmastr1, Feb 20, 2023

I am 54 years old and newly diagnosed with metastic prostate cancer. I have always enjoyed beer, wine and other drinks socially. Generally 1 to 4 drinks a week. What have your doctors been telling you about alcohol? Do I have to abstain completely? I am going on a cruise in April and I was hoping to enjoy a drink or two every day since it’s included and I’m on vacation. I plan on discussing this with my doctor as the trip gets closer but I wanted to hear some thoughts from this community.

I have fought this for 15 years. My experience is that not once did any of my doctors mention alcohol consumption. They did say restrict fatty processed meats and beef. (I was a heavy steak eater-doctors attribute steak to causing cancer-I have zero DNA markers for cancer)
Also I am not a big drinker- but I have had and continue to have social drinks. Usually two whenever I’m in that scenario. Wine or alcohol. Again-doctors (7) didn’t comment. Just my history.

My doctor told me no alcohol since it contains sugar, natural or otherwise.
Cancer feeds on cells and cells feed on sugar so it makes since that cancer feeds on alcohol.

Ringmaster:
Personal opinion: Go on your cruise and enjoy yourself.
Indulge in the way and to the extent that you outlined, which does not sound excessive for a brief cruise.
Newly dx; what is your tx need or status?
I have been consumed by dx and tx for a year now.
If you can relax and enjoy your cruise before you get "stuck in the medical express lane", it might be a nice pre-treatment break.

Shorthand for diagnosis - dx
And treatment- tx
I believe, could be inaccurate, happens often

I have been on Abiratone for about a month and my PSA level dropped from 359 to 69. I just got my first Lupron shot Thursday. I have had no symptoms from the cancer nor any side effects from the medication yet other than weight loss which I am keeping in check by eating more proteins and carbs.
