Chronic nausea for 6 years! HELP!

Posted by janethmc @janethmc, Feb 14, 2023

My mom is now 84 and has been experiencing chronic nausea for 6 yrs that use to be seasonal in Alabama (Feb - Oct), but now year round. She has recently started taking Imipromene to reduce the sensitivity of the gut which takes several weeks to start working, but about the time it seemed to be working she had a bad UTI and of course a round of antibiotics. Her nausea during the UTI and antibiotics was high level and around the clock coupled with anxiety and lack of sleep. She is taking Nexium and now Phenergen (vs Reglan which stopped working after 2 months). Her gut seems more sensitive so we are trying to give her foods with probiotics and prebiotics to build the healthy bacteria again. Phenergan is helping her sleep at night better, but unstable due to dizziness. We are not sure what to do and her gastroenterologist seems puzzled. We are also going to try the ReliefBand and praying that works for her! Any suggestions of a great doctor in Alabama or near?

I had to stop eating Fibrous meats like steak and pork. Chicken is my main meat. Fish is good too. Just real fond of it unless it’s fried.
Look online at the Gastroparesis diet. I use it more for a guide. Skins of fruits and vegetables are not good because your tummy can’t grind it up.
I miss all that really miss my salads but do not miss the nausea like I said before. Give your stomach a break once in a while and have soup and crackers. Good luck.

I could have written your story except nausea 5 years later still. I know i eat at 6 and sleep at 9 or so. Too late? On dexilant but can't seem to get food under control. No consisitency even if i write down. Cut out caffeine, whole wheat, and others. What about dairy? Thanks

Thank you Mike for your input. Her gastric emptying test showed no problem, but I actually wonder if that fluctuates. Do you know? What kind of diet do you maintain with gastrophoresis that helps you? You still have nausea? We rate mom's nausea level on a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being the worst and the 50 mg of Imipramine during am and pm may be starting to make a difference because her nausea level has decreased since and had a few breaks. But following her antibiotic for the UTI, she was staying on Phenergen...probably 3 weeks. She does eat some dairy, but only yogurt.
I am glad you are able to control yours more with diet.

Has she had a stomach emptying test? I had so many problems with nausea and vomiting, I was diagnosed with a GI condition called gastrophoresis. I’m free from nausea., after my GI told me to use Orgain , a powdered drink you can mix with fresh vegetables or fruit, and milk or soy, it’s healthy and easy to digest, I buy at Costco, it really helps me, and eating small meals, more often if you can tolerate. I stopped taking all prescriptions they had been given me for pain that was slowing down my digestive system. So far it’s been working, nausea free for 5 years.

The Mayo Clinic has excellent information on Gastrophoresis to read to see if your symptoms may warrant more testing ,

I would recommend seeing a specialist at any of Mayo’s locations., I’ve always had success with them. I personally have been to the Rochester Mayo Clinic, and highly recommend it to anyone who is still suffering,

I wish I could get there again now for a very rare condition I was recently diagnosed with, it’s called Nutcrackers Syndrome, they only have a few doctors who have experience dealing with this, and one is at Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. I’m a Washington state citizen, but people from all around the world have always been going there, and had success!

I have a hard time controlling mine with diet. I take dexilant and pepcid in between 30 mg doses in the morning and night of dexilant. I eat a lot of cheese which I know is not good. The funny thing is I will go a week without issues and then a week of complete nausea 24/7/ I was told by drs recently there is not cure. Basically should not eat late in the day, which I do sometimes, but it is about finding what works for you as a person. There is no one size fits all.

Hello.
Yes, I take phenergan regularly, often every 6 hours as needed. While I have been prescribed other drugs for nausea such as Zofran and Reglan, these 2 drugs come with unpleasant side effects, and my doctor did advise me that Reglan has been known to cause neurological damage.
I take phenergan because of a liver disease. My pancreatic and liver ducts are dilated. Nausea is a frequent side effect of this problem.
As a side bar, I too get frequent UTI's and the antibiotics are hard on my stomach. Taking a probiotic along with the antibiotic has proved helpful. But, I do know that frequent use of antibiotics can create long term problems with one's stomach. I am still recovering from my last course of antibiotics that were given 2 months ago. It is not unusual for this to happen.
I am so sorry about your mother, and I hope she is feeling better soon. Check out some probiotics for her.
I wish you both well.

You can get D- Mannose with Cranberry at a health food store or order it online. I used to get UTI,s all the time from a weak immune system. Read about it. Keeps the UTI,s away and it's all natural. Hope this can help someone

Have you tried olanzapine? It is off-label to treat nausea, but it helped me. The Relief Band was minimally helpful, but some seem to get lots of relief from it.
