It really is a tough decision that many of us struggle with so I completely understand your hesitation and concern.
My bone loss was all in my spine and I did not want to take medication, believing that I could improve my bone density naturally with greater attention to my health. My diet was already extremely healthy and I exercised daily but I thought I could increase my exercise and pay even greater attention to my diet to gain back some of my loss. During that time, I suffered tremendous bone loss. Biggest mistake of my life delaying medication.
We are all different but from my experience and everything I've read, you just can't build back bone after menopause without medication. I ultimately chose to go on Forteo since it predominantly builds the spine and I had some increase in density. Not as much as I had hoped but at least their was gain and not continued loss. I had no side effects. The best part of being on it was that for 2 years, I didn't think about or constantly worry about my bones. That in itself was a great relief.

That is very helpful. I also eat very healthy and exercise 5-6 x week. I will take your experience to heart and reconsider my initial reluctance. I will also investigate Forteo since the spine is primarily where my bone loss is as well. Thanks so much for sharing.

I am 54 and have a -3.4 T score in spine. I exercise, eat right etc. I am thinking the best route for me is hormone replacement therapy. I had no periods most of my life due to being on birth control pill.

teb. If I may ask. What are your T scores before and after Forteo? What other meds did you try before Forteo? Are you familiar with The Whole Body Approach to Osteroporsis by Dr Keith McCormick?

Anyone who has Osteoporosis:

Be careful of ceramic tile and spraying room air fresheners. If you have ceramic tile in your bathroom, put down good rugs so that you don't slip and fall. It happens so fast, and you will not be able to brace yourself. That is how I got a Burst Compression Lumbar One Fracture. It did not heal right and I still can't have surgery until my bones get stronger. I used to be a cheerleader many years ago turning flips and doing it all. Then I had roller skated several hours per week until I was 48 years old. No smoking, maybe 5 drinks per year, eating healthy and have no idea how I got Osteoporosis. I used to be a strong body. Now, I am on Evenity hoping after 12 shots that I can get surgery to fix my problem. I can't stand over 5 mins at a time.
