@jasonh6 I am going through what you are right now and have so many questions! Due to an accident 9 months ago, my right leg was destroyed. My knee is essentially fused due to hetertopic ossification from the trauma and many surgeries that resulted from the accident. I've only been dealing with this for under a year. I can't imagine the decades you have gone through! My wife is my care taker and I am wondering about the process you went through to have insurance pay your wife for the full time caregiving?

Diagnosed with Heterotopic Ossification; my R. hip abductor tendon is turning to bone 3/2024.
Successful hip replacement in August ‘23. Five weeks following, as a passenger in an SUV, I was thrown forward due to abrupt stop to avoid head on . Extreme pain, bedrest, hardware stable.
Result was a “de-gloving” injury, where an. Tendon and muscles were shredded and tore off of the bone and surrounding area.
December 2023, extensive surgery to repair. Rehab, non-weight bearing for 8 weeks. Began on walker, did well. Passenger again, driver swerved and threw my body into right door ( I had seatbelt on!).

This blew the wound to allow stem cells to permeate the yet unhealed muscle and tendon, so it began forming bone in the tendon and muscle. X-rays between 5 weeks saw 2” growth!

Before I knew this had happened where I had been walking 240 feet four times a day and rehab. The pain became so excruciating. It was like a piece of coral was sticking in my side and butt. I could only walk five steps without having to sit down, that is the way I have remained until the present .

I am chronologically considered old, but my spirit and soul and heart are young. I am married to the love of my life of 46 years and we have a lot to do traveling being with friends and family and our precious grandchildren. I am now wheelchair bound, and my husband does everything for me, I am very blessed in the fact that I can’t stand and transfer, other words go from bed to wheelchair wheelchair to potty potty to wheelchair.

I can tell when the bone quits growing and I’m easier and I can sit for long periods of time then after a month sure enough here it comes again, and it starts growing again pain. my young doctor sees the outward person, but doesn’t understand. I am willing to push through anything to keep going at least to be on a walker. I was on a walker before this happened and I was very happy to go and do drive travel anything I wanted I am ARDS survivor, Yet again, after being on life-support for seven weeks in 09 I am here by God’s grace.

we accept whatever happens and we will get through it together with God‘s help, the doctor said he had done all he could and threw his hands up. If can come up with a plan that would help me at least get back on my walker, I would love that if not, we’ll do the very best we can, my doctor said he didn’t understand why this hurts so bad and I thought imagine sitting on a giant sticker a piece of coral on your butt and see how comfortable you are. Perhaps this will help you perhaps someone will be able to guide us in a way that perhaps we should go My “Mantra” is… I am not critically ill, I am medically intriguing! With that I follow with the verse “I am fearfully and wonderfully made“; there’s a lot to work with no matter what age keep on going and keep on trying any suggestions or ideas they are welcome and may God bless you.
