I think hotshot surgeon need to be reported to the hospital, at the very least. So sorry you had to go through all that & still not well. Different hospital, maybe?
My son at the age of 5 had a partial bowl obstruction (Illeus paralized bowel). This lasted a week. He was in so much pain, begging us to kill him. It was awful.!
Had CAT scans every day to see if the bowel was moving. And finally the doctor recommended, we give him milk of magnesia. It irritates the colon from above to get it working so it can move again. And it worked! Had to give him milk of Mag for 2 months every morning. He is 29 now and he’s never had an issue with his colon since that time!!
When I had my second child by C-section, my bowels became paralyzed from the air hitting the intestine. They advised me to use milk of magnesia to get the bowels moving again… And it worked!
I’m not saying you should try this without checking with your physician first or doing your own research.
Good Luck🤞
I had a partial colectomy in May of 2019 (LAR in two areas). Three months after, I developed an obstruction. I had the NG tube and they did CT every day to see if it was clearing. After day 7 with no progress (and a small bowel follow through where I started throwing up stool and contrast) they did surgery. I was full of adhesions. During the small bowel surgery, my bowel was inadvertently cut and I developed a fistula. Ultimately, that led to months of issues and huge weight loss. In November of that same year I developed a perforation and became septic.
It is now almost five years later and I have not had another obstruction. I was very careful with what I ate initially because I was so fearful of another obstruction it was so painful and so scary. But I now eat pretty much anything, including fruits and veggies (except celery). One day I ate several pieces of celery and next day felt similar feelings of obstruction.
The first year after these surgeries, I did a ton of abdominal massage after eating. There are you tube videos that show you and it really helped. Drink tons of water and move around
i had partial small bowel resection because of Crohns disease. back in 2009. they took out about 18 inches. because nothing was getting through. except diarrhea. or just liquids. when they put it back together, they removed my appendix. they connected the small bowel to where the appendix was at the end. it took quite a while to heal. for that part and my abdomen. which left a scar about 10 inches long. the scar runs about 5 inches below my ribs down right through the middle of my navel. i was put on Remicade infusions. and right now, i'm in remission. so the bowel resection for obstruction, if done right will help immensely. but make sure that you have a gastroenterologist who knows what they're doing and cares about you. actually the doctor who did me was a general surgeon. he was awesome. good luck, d
I a so sorry to read of your Moms journey.. Grateful that you were there to help her. I am very outspoken as I had been dx with rare cancer 9 years ago when I felt great , then it all changed,, now it seems because of that and I am still alive I have to keep being my own DR, . you have to do the same. I take care of both of my parents as well. The truth is most medical these days truly sucks.. you are lucky to make it out alive unless you are lucky to be at one of the better clinics around the Country.. You don't have to be old , I wasn't that old I just had lousy Drs but thankfully a few good ones,, With your Mom,,, someone should have done a ct on her from day 1, all kinds of things can happen in the Colon . If she wasn't better in the first few weeks with diet and meds then a series of scans and scopes should have been done,,, No one will speak up for you,, I have learned I have to tell the DRs what I need and that doesn't always work,,,. hence my current situation did not turn out the way I expected,, but I am taking it in my hands to make sure everything is done. I hope your Mom is feeling better today ,, and I wish you both well,, stay on top of all Drs,,,, Use google!! I know I do.
Well, you are all up my alley. My appendix burst on a cruise ship in 2015 so I had sepsis and 5 hours of surgery in the Azores. Not the best concept.
Since then I have had 4 more surgeries for incisional hernias and one for adhesions that caused obstructions. I have had 3 obstructions requiring the NG tube. The last one was in Sept. I live in Reno and surgeons here say they don’t have the expertise to care for my issues of a tortuous colon, mobile cecum and more adhesions.
Here is the issue. The more abdominal surgeries you have, the less chance you have of total recovery. I am always in pain. I was referred to the University of Utah Medical Center and the colorectal surgeon there is afraid he would do more harm than good if he performed surgery. So no more surgery unless it is emergent. I would then have to be flown to Utah.
For the past week, I have had a fever and the runs. Take ER docs say it is gastroenterisit. I am starting to wonder as I have had a fever for a week now. The CT scan shows “Increased colonic fluid, suggesting of gastroenteritis.” So the ER doc said it is gastroenteritis, not just a suggestion.
We need to stay vigilant as most doctors really don’t understand the abdomin.
Take care you all!
I have had 3 small bowel obstructions. Had to have all but 2ft of my small intestines removed. I have alot of symptoms with only having 2ft. left.
High protein, high carb.low fiber diet and limited plain water. Is the diet I am on. Some people don't absorb enough fluids with plain water, some people need sodium and glucose (sugar) in their fluids for the body to absorb. I also have IV fluids 5 days a week to keep from getting dehydrated. For a partial small bowel obstruction foods should be easy to digest and foods should be cooked well undercooked foods can cause more problems for the small intestines.
I still suffer every day with my Short gut syndrome and my last surgery was in 2019.
I have never heard of using olive oil to prevent further SBO. I had a SBO operation because of adhesions last November and was in the hospital 2 weeks. I am fine now. But I am very careful with food - no raw fruit or veggies and no salad. Everything very well-cooked, I use Miralax every day (dr said that was ok) plus one Colace and one Senna plus teaspoon of Metamucil. That seems to work for me. I will ask my doctor about olive oil. Also important to walk or get some exercise. I never want to have another SBO again.
yes things do get better!

I am interested as well. I was just hospitalized with a small bowel obstruction, 3 weeks ago,,, I had the NG Tube down the nose to stomach for 6 days of misery until I said enough and took it out,, ticked off my surgeon who after discharge dumped me as a patient , even though he has been my surgeon for 9years since I first had cancer in my colon... The ER I went to did the all the right things,, I had come in after 5 days of suffering and horrific pain thinking this will pass. While moved to my ex surgeons hospital he said they would get it reversed with out surgery,, later when discharged he joked , but he is not funny, so the comment he made that maybe it was just an air pocket was hideous. also telling the other Drs that he would be afraid to do surgery on me,. as I am too thin and the problems he had with my original colectomies (which caused this) were due to me not having any thing to adhere to on my gut,,,, I knew in hospital I needed my GI DR,, no one waws consulting with him or my cardio... The next day out my GI put me back on liquids,, read the second ct from ER that hot shot surgeon didn't read just shushed it ooff as why did they do another,,, if he had read it it clearly shows the obstruction and the stricture as well as major narrowing of intestines,,, had a colonoscopy as well, biopsies taken.., I am toldby all I am at high risk of this happening again,,,, so I am very careful with what I eat,, I keep losing weight, I know I need to drink tthe protein drinks but forget... so something has to be done,,, I was thinking what you had??? so when you ask when do symptoms go away what kind of symptoms are you having and what are you eating ,, are you on a special diet??? What did they tell you to expect after the surgery,,,, have you had a colonoscopy to see where things are,, I would appreciate any info and I wish you pain free days, I know they are horrible,,
