Free lumpectomy, mastectomy bras

I volunteer at a breast cancer mastectomy shop connected to my local hospital in S. E. Georgia. It is called Ribbon of Hope and is run by a qualified, licensed mastectomy fitter. We have a wide variety of bras, prosthetics, lymphedema sleeves and wigs for breast cancer (and other cancer) survivors. Some are even free. We accept and file with a variety of insurance carriers and many of these products are covered by insurance. For instance, I have traditional Medicare with a Plan F supplement thru United Health care. With a Dr order I receive 6 bras (valued at about $55.00 each) every year as well as a new prosthetic every two years. The bras are beautiful and come in all shapes, colors and sizes. They are a godsend as I went everywhere when first diagnosed in 2013 looking for, but couldn’t find, bras that fit for reconstruction/ mastectomy. Many insurances provide coverage for these products.
A lot of hospitals have such a shop. Ask your oncologist or surgeon if one exists in your area. You will be happy you did.

The general instructions I was handed were for wearing sports bra's after lumpectomy. I can't even imagine pulling one of them over my head over 2 incisions. So I looked all over trying to find a super soft but supportive bra that had back or front closure and then did a search and found some online merchants that also file the claims for you. And yes some of them were gorgeous!!!! I will find out about the shop here at the hospital, thank you for the great info!!!!

Yes, this is a benefit many do not know about. I go to the store on the subway level of the Gonda building at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, The ladies are so caring and took the time needed to fit me with a bra after my mastectomy. I am on Medicare with a supplemental policy and get six bras a year with a doctor’s prescription. They file the insurance for me. It was wonderful. At age 71 I had never been fitted for a bra (what a difference it makes) and have never had so many bras in the drawer at the same time:)

Please,Could you tell me the place that files the claim for you ?

It is at the shop at the hospital but you can also file your own claim if you want to purchase some online I think it's a 30.00 limit for medicare per bra but don' quote me on that 🙂
