bone density medication while on anastrozole
How do you feel about going on medicine for your bones when you are taking anastrozole or similar? My bone density scan showed osteopenia (I'm 67 and small so no surprise). The "neck" score was -2 and that was the worst. The others were fine. I really don't want to go on more medication, but I know that the anastrozole can be hard on bones. What is your experience?

Don't know about them. I'll check them out. Thanks.
In a similar situation with numbers. I’m in month 10 of Anastrozole and I am scheduling a DEXA at one year to check out if and how my bones may be compromised. Insurance will only pay every two years.
I had osteopenia before I took anastozole. The first six months I took nothing for my bones because the doctors wanted to make sure that I had no side effects from it. At my 6 month evaluation, I was started on Prolia. Right before my 1 year mark, I had a BMD/DEXA scan and had full blown osteoporosis. My endocrinologist felt that the 6 months that I was not protecting my bones was significant. My last scan since Prolia had me back to osteopenia but better than before the cancer. At my 5 year mark, my oncologist did 1 Prolia because I was no longer on anastozole. Last month I started alendronate to lock in the benefits of the Prolia because without that, there could be a rebound effect where my bones would return to osteoporosis. Everyone’s treatments are different, so just stay on top of your bones.
Algaecal and Strontium are probably the best natural solution! My cousin in Albuquerque is just taking 800 mg of Calcium Citrate as prescribed by her doctor after her 5 years of anastrozole. She had DCIS and now has osteoporosis to deal with. Fosamax and related drugs have terrible side effects!
Just an FYI. I drank Premier Protein during chemo when my damaged tastebuds made most foods taste awful. (I couldn't stand Ensure). I got Premier Protein at Target and Walmart. I think it's also on Amazon.
That’s what I was going to suggest. Fairlife Nutrition Plan is dairy with 730mg of calcium and 30g protein with 150 calories and takes great. Fairlife milk has 380mg of calcium which is higher than other milk due to being ultra-filtered.
That sounds promising. Thank you both for the suggestion.
Oh, my gosh. Thanks for that.
But no drugs for it yet? Thanks.
I guess insurance can vary, but once I hit osteoporosis, insurance covered DEXA every year. Wait and see your results, then call insurance. Ex. They didn’t cover my ultrasound screening for breast cancer because it’s not routine. When I called them to explain that I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction, I couldn’t have mammo—just ultrasound, they quickly informed my doctor how to enter the code for my new normal. Hang in there for results. If it’s osteopenia, then I was told every 2 years.
