Ashwagandha

Posted by tessie63 @tessie63, Feb 10, 2023

Has any one tried Ashwagandha? It comes in a powder or tablet form I believe. My daughter mentioned it so I googled it and found it there. It is suppose to aid in nerve healing.

I take it in capsule form to hopefully aid in stress relief. Interesting that it might help nerve healing.

How much do you take and where did you get it from?

Ashwaganda seems to be a relatively safe traditional Ayurvedic herbal medicine. A few thing to consider before trying it:
Talk to your treating physicians, especially if you meet any of the cautionary criteria below, or before being prescribed any new medications.
Ashwaganda is an unregulated supplement. Make sure you buy if from a reliable source, some tests have indicated it may be contaminated with an unsafe level of lead when bought indiscriminantly.
Like many other supplements, it can be unsafe for certain people.
If you have prostate cancer or are/may be pregnant it should not be taken.
If you have diabetes, it should only be taken with the knowledge of your doctor. It can affect blood sugar and how diabetes medications work.
It may interact with the medications in the following classes: sedatives and medications with sedating effects, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants and diabetes medication.

Please ley us know if it works (or not) for you.

I think it does from the helping my brain calm down from the stress of work angle. Understand I take just a few supplements :). Picture shows the four doses of my overall regimen today (l to r - bedtime, dinner, lunch, breakfast), so no way to 100% know if ashwagandha is doing its thing. As Sue said, talk to your doctor before taking anything.

Thank you Sue for the information. I don’t think many here are familiar with it as I have only heard from two people who are using it. I am on the regular drugs for neuropathy, Lyrica and Aventyl. Hope these ones are ok with it.

I would be very careful mixing these three, which each have a slight sedative effect. I am not sure at what rate these drugs may build up in your system. You could find yourself sleeping so deeply it depresses your breathing over time.

Please run this by your doc if you have not done so already.

Thank you Sue. Unfortunately I ordered this through Amazon already. I will certainly take your advice on this though.

I used to take it regularly, but then found out it can cause liver injury and affect thyroid hormone levels. I have hypothyroidism, and my levels sometimes go out of whack for no apparent reason, and it takes months to get everything back on track.

I still take it occasionally (GNC Ashwagandha Extract 470mg), but never for more than a few days in a row, with months in between.
