Xifaxan

Posted by drpepper @drpepper, Jan 3, 2019

A number of you have indicated success with SIBO using drug Xifaxan. Talked with my doctor yesterday and he said he didn't see how this would help. Said for IBS and travelers diarrhea. He reluctantly prescribed 600 mg per day for 10 days. Feedback appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for all your feedback re taking xifaxan. I picked up the script last evening. Should you discontinue prebiotics and/or probiotics while taking the xifaxan?? My thinking is that the antibiotic is designed to get rid of bad bacteria (??) and taking a pro/prebiotic would be an asset. But it may be that the antibiotic attacks all bacteria. Just not sure. Your experience/understanding appreciated.

I took probiotics while on antibiotics. Prebiotics are a bit more controversial. I have read articles pro and con prebiotics and advising people to introduce them later in the healing process.

I don't know about the prebiotics. The probiotics are fine just make a good space between taking them and the antibiotic. DO NOT TAKE THEM AT SAME TIME.

Hi, I, too, have been taking xifaxan for two years for HE. Two weeks ago I was without it because I could not get it due to no approval for payment from insurance and now I am very constipated, so I took a Fleet enema. My HE is bad now. I'm wobbly and feel my brain is waterlogged. I am scared and don't want it to get worse. I got constipated once before because I missed a dose of Miralax and after Fleet enema I got back to normal, but this time since they let me go for so long without my xifaxan I'm afraid something was damaged.
Do you or anyone have any ideas of what I should do? It's the weekend now so I will have trouble reaching my hematologist as it's always impossible to reach him anyway.
Thank you

I know you can order from the Canadian pharmacy’s for very low price but it could take months .
Also there is a coupon you can get from your GI that might be helpful and I believe the company has some kind of coupon.

That's wonderful! It's still going to be hard because my rent just went up $250. a month, but hey what can you do?
Would you mind sending info about where to get the Canadian Xifaxan? It may be so low I can afford it. I would really appreciate it. I would hate to get in this predicament again.
Thank you very much,
Sincerely,
Susan

Oh, I'm sorry, John, but I forgot to mention the coupon. I'll ask my Dr. about it for sure!
Thank you, again!

@myprayers
Regarding Canadian pharmacies: I just placed my first order for another drug. It’s easy to do. Look up Certified Canadian Pharmacies. I just picked one that had good options for me.

My heart goes out to all who suffer from C-diff!
After suffering 5 episodes in a year and a half (having been treated with Vancomycin pulse & taper method each time by my GP, a Gastro Dr. treated me with 2 weeks Vancomycin 2 times/day, followed immediately by 4 weeks of Xifaxin (also known as
Rifaxamin). I now take Garden of Life Probiotic for Women and have (myself) added 1 Align probiotic every 3rd day - to try & build up the good bacteria in my gut. Also, no raw fruits or raw veggies (only cooked veggies)/no cruciferous (gaseous) veggies/ plain chicken or salmon/oatmeal in a.m. with tablespoon of Psyllium (fiber) sprinkled on it and 2 tablespoons of apple sauce on it/ LOTS of liquids (filtered water/plain tea/ soup or broth, throughout the day/NO sweets or added sugar/NO spicy or fried foods.
So far, so good since end of November (now 2 1/2 months). Wish me luck.
Hope this might work for someone else, too.
N.B. I am not a medical professional. Just researched online and tried different bland options.
