I have high cholesterol and cannot tolerate any statins. Luckily I also have a calcium score in the single digits so I'm not too concerned. However I added omega-3 oils to my daily regime last year because I'm sure that I'm not getting enough of them and I'm not going to eat a lot of salmon. The lipid panel done 3.5 months later as part of my routine cardio blood work, showed the highest level of HDL that I'd ever had. Since HDL does a lot of things including Hoover LDL out of the arteries, my cardiologist and I were pleased. There was no other change that I made that would explain that difference and I don't know if I can attribute it to omega-3 oils but I'm not going to stop taking them. I do think the science is pretty clear that they're helpful in general.
