NTX Biomarker Test

Posted by leeosteo @leeosteo, Feb 2, 2023

Should an N-Telopeptide test be done prior to taking osteoporosis meds? If the reference range of 26-124 nmol/mmol is optimum, what does it mean if test result is outside the range, either lower or higher? Lower you don't need meds or higher a stronger med?

Has anyone had experience with this?

The N-Telopeptide test is relatively new, and exactly how to use it is a developing science.
The test needs to be interpreted by your provider based on your age, osteopenia/osteoporosis status, current medications and other factors. It is not an absolute measure standing alone.

Mine was in the normal range but my bone density was terrible and I had multiple fractures. I believe the purpose of a baseline is to see what difference happens with meds, not to determine treatment itself. But ask your doc.

Sue, so is a CTX test used more? I believe it measures collagen breakdown in bone resorption process. Where the P1NP measures bone build up? Are these tests typically used by physicans treating osteoporosis patients?
