Ileostomy or stoma scope: What can I expect?

Posted by jer22 @jer22, Sep 28, 2022

Was wondering if anyone had this done and could give me info how the procedure is done.
Do you need a clean-out like a regular colonoscopy, how does the after procedure work when I assume you are sedated somewhat.
How/who gets you ready to leave.
Are there any issues to be aware of.
I will be getting this done at Mayo in a few weeks.
Thanks

@jer22, this is such a good question to ask fellow ile-ostomates like @katydid77 @susanbfoster @dancing1 @kenc @msgtrebholtz and others. They can help answer what they experienced.

@candywocrn may be able to provide Mayo Clinic resources on what to expect. In the meantime, this pamphlet from U Michigan Medical Center is really helpful.

Jer, have you checked the Mayo patient portal? Were further instructions for prep uploaded there for you?

I’m sorry. I don’t think I can be of much help. My husband has a urostomy.

Hi there, sorry to be late replying, and you may have already had your procedure. If so, I hope it went well.

I have had one ileoscopy. The "clean out" procedure that you get from Mayo should be tailored to the fact that you don't have a colon. If it looks like a regular colon cleansing with laxatives, contact your provider and ask if that is correct for you. If I recall correctly (and the last one I had was 2015) I had to fast and be on clear liquids, but I didn't have to have laxatives.

I was anesthetized for the procedure, using the same protocol as for a colonoscopy, so you will need a driver.

Bring an appliance change to the procedure, you are going to want a fresh bag and maybe wafer as well. The last one I had they only took off the bag and not the wafer, but I needed to change the wafer when I got home (this was not done at Mayo, and they kind of left me a mess).

Thanks for the info, they decided to check a few other things before doing the stoma scope. (Dec. 13)
I have a small hernia in the area of the stoma I am almost sure that is causing some of my issues.
So am sure I will at some time need the procedure.
Thanks again

Had the procedure done (Ileoscopy) at Mayo in Eau Claire, Wi
All I had was a 10 hour fast, nothing the morning of. The procedure went excellent,
-The Doctor, anesthesiologist & nurses. were great, answered all my questions and assured me the procedure was not like a regular colonoscopy but similar and they did many. (Which was of concern for me)
I also would like to add, the care at these satellite Mayo facilities I think are top notch, seem to be more concerned.
Seems I may have start of Crohn's
Thanks all for info you wrote.
