Small Fiber Neuropathy turning in to Large Fiber Neuropathy
Hello everyone -
As I know one can develop large fiber neuropathy after small fiber, I'm wondering if any of you have experienced it? EMG/Nerve Conduction study reads negative then changes over time to positive?
Thank you,
Rachel

Yes one year later my SFN is also LFN, according to my recentnerve conduction study.
I was diagnosed with SFN with autonomic dysfunction about one year ago after 12 years of no answers and suffering. I am feeling lately like I am going to Large Fiber Neuropathy due to the changes in my thigh muscles. How did you know you were getting LFN?
Like you I have suffered for many years with the pain of PN and after a neurologist did EMG testing and a nerve biopsy he told me that I have SFN with autonomic problems and LFN. It seems that the EMG test results indicated LFN. That might be worth talking to your doctor about. I get the impression that neurologists do EMG testing quite frequently.
Thank you for oyur reply. Do you know what symptoms you have the relate only to the LFN?
My Dr does not seem sure about my neuropathy.
I have a terrible time with coffee
Most think I am making too mucof it I feel addicted but harder than when I became a Christian and God helped me stop alchol and smoking which I did in Excess!
It is my understanding that the problems I have with balance, walking naturally without stutter steps or wobble and diminished leg strength are all symptoms of LFN.
There is a helpful article on: https://neuropathycommons.org/neuropathy/neuropathy-overview
This is a short quote from that article:
"Large fibers carry messages to the muscles to control our movements. They also receive and carry some sensations to the spinal cord and brain including touch, vibration, and balance."
I hope this is helpful!
There are several tests like the Nerve Conduction Test etc that can aid doctors in their diagnosis. My were done by a neurologist and it seems they do this kind of testing and analysis quite frequently.
Hopefully your doctor can help you with any coffee problems you might have. I drink a couple of cups each morning and that's it. It really seems to help ease some of the early morning symptoms I experience.
Thanks, yes coffee does help my degerative disc and sciatica it seems to help me overall. Except for my stomach I have GERD and sometimes the coffee has too much acid I think.I do eat oatmeal every morning and bannas are supposted to help with the acid.I take omeprezol for my gerd normally.
I also have read and been told by AMA diabetes that caffeine is not recommended for nerves as in neuropathy
Calgary neuropathy has said the same?
I have been diagnosed with idiopathic LFN only. I do not have it in my thighs. I have it below knees to toes, and below elbows to fingers. Balance is main issue with feet, and I can’t hop, skip, run, jump, squat or climb, but was able to learn to walk again after my sudden attack. My knees don’t seem to connect the bottom and top parts of the leg well. I don’t have reflex reactions when hit in knees and elbows with the hammer. My hand gripping and holding things are challenging. When Neurologists start at my toes/fingers and prick me with a pin, I don’t really start feeling the pricks until they get to over my ankles/wrists or a little further past that. But i normally have full sensation by the time they get up to my knees/elbows. We all have different variations though, these are just what I have with LFN. Regardless of those external tests and EMG tests for my LFN, I get the humming and internal vibrations feeling in my thighs sometimes, but not constant like it is below the knees and in feet, which are where I have the nerve pain that Gabapentin helps. That’s just my experience anyway, I hope you get to ask your doctor soon.
