burning soles of feet

Posted by rmoran1966 @rmoran1966, Jan 19, 2023

i have neuropathy of the feet and legs. i am okay during the day. when i go to bed around 10-12 i am still feeling okay. waiting to fall asleep after 1/2 to 1 hour my soles start to burn and i can not go to sleep. eventually i fall asleep and when i get up in the morning i have no burning. any ideas how to lessen this issue?

I have the exact same thing with the soles of my feet burning at night, and have found that Alpha Lipoic Acid helps me greatly. I just use the common drug store variety and take 200 mg about an hour before bed. However, Mentor John Bishop has much more information and advice about Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) on this website. You should search out this info and try it. Good luck to you.

Hi @rmoran1966, I see it's been a couple of years since you last posted, welcome back. It sounds like you still are not finding any relief for your burning feet at night. I wasn't sure if you saw my response to your first post so I thought I would repeat the information here:
----------------
There are also other causes for burning feet other than neuropathy. Here's some information you might find helpful.
– Hot feet: Causes and treatments – Medical News Today: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319911

There is also another discussion on the topic here:
– Erythromelalgia: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/erythromelalgia/.

There is an Erythromelalgia Clinic in Minnesota which serves as a focal point for clinical research at Mayo Clinic. The care at the Erythromelalgia Clinic is guided by a team of doctors, including specialists in dermatology, neurology and vascular medicine. These specialists work together to offer you specialized skin testing, an accurate diagnose and a treatment plan that meets your needs. This page – https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/erythromelalgia-clinic-in-minnesota/overview/ovc-20421220 – has more details, and a video in which Mayo Clinic dermatologist Mark Davis, describes erythromelalgia and treatment options.

Has your doctor suggested any treatment or therapy to help with your feet getting hot only at night?

To Moran 1966
I am sorry to hear you continue to have this problem. Have you had any type of medical diagnosis? As a medical provider myself I encourage you to be seen by your physician prior to self administration of OTC medications and supplements. Keep us informed.

This is exactly the pattern I have, although I also have paresthesia in my lower legs (feels like fizzy water undulating up and down my legs) before the onset of the burning. I’ve recently been diagnosed with length dependent axonal sensory neuropathy after having a nerve conductivity test. I sometimes have a few nights when it isn’t as bad, but when it is, I’ve trying everything to stop the burning and get to sleep. I still take supplements like PEA, ALA, NAC, and use topical creams like magnesium and capsicum cream. I’ve recently been experimenting with compression socks. To fall asleep I’ve tried Kava Kava and cheery juice… I’ve also tried gabapentin and nortryptiline, but don’t tolerate them at all. None of these things have been that helpful and some nights are intolerable. The only thing I’ve found that at least helps me get to sleep - eventually - is ibuprofen and CBD.

Hello @rc1954, Welcome to Connect. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a list of treatments including complementary and alternative treatments that neuropathy patients have found helpful - https://www.foundationforpn.org/treatments/.

I also have neuropathy but only the numbness and gabapentin doesn't help with numbness. I shared my story in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.

Do you mind sharing a little more about your diagnosis and any other treatments you've tried?

I've had severe pn for over 6 years. It seems that I've tried most of everything here and currently use a hefty dose of gabapentin (18000) and I hate the stuff. It gives me some relief, but as with all things for me, after some time it seems that I need to up the dosage. Some have suggested Vicks and it has eucalyptus oil in it. I've started experimenting with essential oils and it has given me some new modest relief. There are alot of eo's out there that reduce inflammation and improve vasodilation. These are powerful and must be used with caution. I only use them in a cream form and dilute the eo's using one drop with several ounces of olive oil. You can learn much more on the web. Please become self-educated before you start playing with the stuff. It can burn the heck out of your feet. Also I'd stay away from vaporing and consuming. Just my two cents. Steve
