Can gabapentin cause muscle pain and cramps in arms & legs?

Posted by sadeyes @sadeyes, Jan 28, 2020

Has anyone ever had the experience of Gabapentin causing severe muscle cramps in arms and legs and muscular pain and feeling of weakness? I know it is supposed to basically do the opposite and help with muscular problems......but this has happened twice to me as soon as I started the gaba and it was very severe,

@tallanne

I have been in chronic pain for 21 years. I've had so many things tried on me by doctors and none of them have been completely successful. I now am on fentinal patches (2 every two days, 150 mcg total) gabapentin, neurontin, tylenol, and my psych meds are suppose to help also. But I recently read the article about Scrambler Therapy and am very eager to try it and get off some, if not all, the meds.
I am contacting the doctors to see if I can be a research patient. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I'm going to look into that as well. May God bless you and keep you 🙏

Gabapentin increased my pain when I had acute sciatica. Lyrica helped me.
Have you considered acupuncture?

I was on highest doses of gabapentin for neurapthy but unfortunately did absolutely nothing for me, but fortunately didn't experience anything negative from it either. I probs got more from the water I drank than the medication.

For me it impossible to isolate one cause of muscle cramps because of severe cervical and lumbar issues, fibromyalgia, and other meds' side effects.

I always consider the benefit/risk/mitigation of side effects and efficacy when deciding to start or stop medications or treatments. Especially if my symptoms that it was prescribed for go away or are greatly reduced. I take 200 mg of Gabapentin 4 times a day and it definitely resolved the extreme and painful burning sensations in my hands, across my hips, behind my legs, and around my ankles. The two side effects that had me thinking about going off were the feelings of exhaustion and serious brain fog . . . as in losing words when I spoke, not being able to think clearly. After almost 3 months, I am finally seeing improvement with those things, thank God! I take the Gab, Norco regularly coupled with muscle relaxers, Tylenol, Advil, Aspercreme sometimes in various combinations. As an FYI, I resisted taking Gab for the last 5 years because of the reported side effects and the trial/error nature of the drug in terms of dosage and effectiveness. I only agreed to try it because of my nerve pain issues that had gotten unbearable.

Sweet pickle juice is a Godsend for muscle cramps!!! I've actually kept a jar in my bedroom at times because getting to the fridge was out of the question. A few hours out of the fridge won't matter. Risk/benefit! LOL 🙂

I hope you find some relief soon! This group is amazing and I agree with others, be your own advocate and research, research, research.

I’ve been taking it for nearly 10 years. I have not experienced any of those problems. At first I wanted to sleep a lot. Complained to my Dr. and he said it would go away. And it did. I have to have it every day now.

Gabapentin is highly tolerated by some and next to poisoness for others. That’s not only my experience but my brother has been a dr for 40 years. It’s a crime how it’s dispensed without precautions.

I have been using gabapentin and thought it was helping my peripheral neuropathy pain at night.

I will try going to sleep without it and see how I do. Thanks

Yes! I’ve been on gabapentin for a year due to severe nerve damage in my leg from Cauda Equina syndrome. Just recently they switched my brand to capsules and every night I get leg and foot cramps. It’s counter productive. Not sure what to do

My recent MRI showed that I have bulging discs at L2-L5 and lots of arthritis in my lower back. Now my legs ache. I do take CBD gummies and occasionally medical marijuana. I was also prescribed Gabapentin 100mg but I'm a little nervous about taking it as I currently take 500mg of Depakote every daily for Epilepsy. On November 21 I got a steroid spinal injection which worked for about 2 1/2 months and I'm due for another soon. Please let me know what else I can do that I might help. I know at 65 I'm getting older but the sore back and legs are hurting.
