Pelvic Radiation Diet?
Hi,
I’m beginning the first of 28 pelvic radiation treatments tomorrow following the hysterectomy I had on October 26th. I have Stage 1B with mutant P53, high grade, predominantly solid growth, endometroid carcinoma, FIGO 3, poorly differentiated.
I’d really appreciate advice on diet during treatment as I’ve been told to be sure I have a bowel movement before each appointment. This will be quite a challenge.
Thanks so much.

I felt that was a challenge to. I had a high fiber cereal and lots of water a mild laxative may help too. which I took the night before
So glad that worked for you. Am hoping you’re doing better now. Thanks!
I’m wondering too if a diet high in fiber will help. For me that means cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and brussel sprouts. I tend more on the constipated side and have found that large helpings of vegetables work for me. Also steel cut oatmeal with flax sprinkled on each serving.
@cls316.
I just completed 31 pelvic radiation treatments. Once I started them I had (and still am experiencing) diarrhea very often. I was advised to follow a low fiber / low residue diet. I frequently require Immodium to keep it tolerable. I guess what I am trying to say is pelvic radiation can cause bowel and
bladder irritation so be prepared for that as well. For me the diarrhea began in the first couple of weeks. My radiation oncologist said that the side effects should begin to improve about 2 weeks after the treatments were finished. I wish you well. Take care!
I have taken 2 stool softeners every day since my radiation 5 years ago. We eat salad and meat for dinner or meat and veggies. Very rarely do we keep a lot of carbs doesn’t mean we don’t have them occasionally. Good luck
Will be starting 25 External Radiation 1/3, I am hoping it will go smoothly. Was a little weirded out when they told me day of simulation, for making form. Leave your shoes on, just pull your pants and undies down, sit down on table. Seemed a little unprofessional. Then told will take 2 1/2 weeks till form is made. And, that was Monday and today am told starts Tuesday, so strange. But, am off work that day, so am hoping for the best. Will let you know this coming week the effects.
@terradean, while it may seem odd to keep your shoes on and just pull your pants and undies down, I prefer to not walk barefoot or socked feet in a hospital setting.
How is radiation going? Did you just finish week 1?
Yes, first four days are over, am not sure I'll ever get used to the pull your pants and undies now, but guess it is what it is. I was scolded friday, in trouble the last 2 days, I drank about 66 oz of water before both appts, thursday, I did go to the bathroom before leaving work takes 45 minutes to get there. Friday did not, but, both days they said my bladder was only half full. I do not know why with drinking that much water why it is not getting to my bladder in time for the appt. Guess I will see what happens being off tomorrow, see if I do better on Monday, however, appt. is 8:35 am in morning. I will drink 33 oz an hr before getting there but not sure that is going to do it, when drinking 66oz last 2 hrs before appt's last 2 days. First day seemed to have headache for about 4 hrs, and seemed to have intense smelling of odors for hrs. But, Wednesday thru Friday, appts are after I leave work just go home eat and fall asleep before long. Friday night Saturday morning woke up 12:30 am having to go to bathroom badly, floor in bathroom ended up pretty wet. All that water decided it was time to leave my body. Very strange.
Guess time will tell. I will say Saturday's are going to be my favorite day of the week, get to stay at work all day, not having to leave early for appts. Radiation so far isn't bothering me much that I can tell, have noticed bowels movements seem to be thinner. But, I do not really get hungry, so just eat because I know I need to eat. Like to drink water though, tomorrow going to drink tea since will be home. Will see how things go Monday.
That’s interesting. I didn’t have a form made they just moved me on the table until I aligned up. I can’t even remember if I had tattoo marks put on my body like they did with my breast.
I actually do not see the tattoo's, but they do move me and line me up to them. Hope this next week goes better,
maybe my kidney's will move water through my body faster for them.
