Hip pain, can't sleep again or get comfortable.....
I was dismissed from PT after 3 months of therapy. I was doing really well but the last few weeks or so I have trouble sleeping and just cannot get comfortable. Toss and turn all night. Lower back and hip pain depending on position and can't seem to find a good one. Have a sleep number bed. Leg started bothering me again as well....calf and thigh cramping, nerve zappers etc...I take 600 mg of Gabapentin at night. I am very active...walk 4-6000 steps a day, continue exercises at home and by day end leg is pretty much done in,.

Hi Cindy @cindymattern, Just a thought but since you mention you are very active, continuing exercises at home and by the end of the day your leg is "done in". Have you tried resting it a day or so to see if it makes a difference in how you sleep at night?
I'm know that on some days when I overdo the exercises, especially shoveling snow now days that I do a lot of tossing and turning at night do to hip and lower back pain along with achy shoulders.
I have actually tried resting it for a few days. I know before I left PT they told me that I needed t be stretching my hip because it was really tight. It's amazing how the knee affects so many different things. I've even tried a Tylenol 3 for pain and another night a muscle relaxer. Could it be my nerves are coming back to life? I know the one tendon runs from your hip to your ankle and it's moved during surgery. I'm not a back sleeper and do have issues with my neck and lower back but they are worse the last few weeks the further I go out from my knee surgery. If I sleep on my back my lower back/neck hurt badly, if I sleep on my side my hip and shoulder hurt. Never ending cycle lol
Have you heard of MFR Therapy? Just wondering if this might be something that would help.

I don't believe so. I do know that when I was in PT often my therapist would massage my leg and feel for really tight spots and apply pressure and massage them to release the tightness. This was my favorite part of therapy when I got on the table and she did this then I had heat and stem (heat only after 6 weeks). I was told a deep tissue massage would benefit me. I'll see if they maybe do this but I was just released December 31 after 3 months of therapy. Did some hip stretching and it didn't bother me last night and slept on my side as well however my shin and knee were hurting but I did do quite a bit of walking yesterday as well as some exercising my leg.
I had SEVERE leg cramping and "zappers" with my second TKR. I communicated this to my nurse navigator and surgeon. My gabapentin was increased to 3x day and a muscle relaxer added along with continued PT, mild walking and icing/elevating. This made sleep and comfort manageable. After 3 months post surgery, the cramps have subsided. My surgeon said this type of cramping is not uncommon. Keep communicating with your surgical team. All the best for an improvement in your situation.
Thanks, I will. I did send them a message yesterday and have not heard anything back. I am 3 months out and since stopping PT a few weeks ago things have I feel gone downhill but they said I was ready to be on my own. Maybe I push myself too much...I walk 4-5000 steps a day doing just daily things like grocery shopping, cleaning the house etc... I don't feel the cramping until I sit down or am in bed. I ice off and off through the night and last night was up to the bathroom every 90 minutes or so. Where is all the coming from? I take my muscle relaxer at bedtime as it makes me way to sleepy during the day but it seems after 600mg of Gabapentin and a 4 mg Tizanadine (muscle relaxer) at bedtime I still could to sleep and I was doing well in PT. Tired but can't sleep.
If your muscles are really tight find a therapist skilled in dry needling also hope they gave you an exercise regimen to continue on your own. I have squats, stationary bike, stretching exercises, balance and endurance exercises. I had TKR in 2021 and just had hand surgery which I could not do any kind exercise for 2 weeks. My awesome knee got a little stiff so as soon as I was allowed I started exercise regimen back up and knee so so much better! Best of luck
