Surgery for GERD

Posted by aliceorangebike @aliceorangebike, Dec 18, 2020

I am considering having surgery to resolve my terrible GERD problems. Toupet fundoplication has been recommended for me but it wraps around only 75% of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Has anyone had this surgery? Did it resolve your severe GERD problems? Do you still need to take Proton Pump Inhibitor medication? Thanks for your input!

I Have post operative gastropanesis.. the result of a Nissen fun. failure .. that was in 2015.. the damage to the hairnet like nerve system that empty the stomach were damaged... they do not regenerate.. there is no reversal.. every meal is a challenge.. now 85 years old.. I wanted my local surgery group to be skilled but they couldn't even figure out what they did wrong.. mayo Minnesota figured it out in a day and gave me a way to cope..

Hi Ken.
Thank you for commenting. What are your symptoms and how did The Mayo Clinic give you ways to cope?
Thank you, Victoria

I've written several times about my ways of coping... but after I lost 50 pounds the GI people started with making me aware that small amounts cut up very small and eating very frequently recognizing that the blender, knives, chewing, gravity has to take the place of what the stomach used to do.. sleeping, napping must be done at least a couple hours after eating.. then never lying down using a regular pillow .. I use a foam wedge with a couple pillows on that.. or a recliner for naps. If my upper body is at rest at a 30 to 45 degree angle.. I drink Pedalyte.. Kefir, coffee in the morning.. I don't eat leafy salads, rarely cabbage or broccoli unless in a blended green smoothie..

I'm so sorry! I was diagnosed 6 months ago with gastroparesis and it's not a good way to live. There are 2 meds arrithomycian and reglan. Unfortunately I can't take either due to my heart. Eat small meals, low carb, low sugar. I was 82 pounds I had a feeding tube. Please reach out if you like. God bless you 🙏

Please look into the Linx procedure first. It has a very high success rate and usually requires no medication afterwards. My husband had the Linx surgery eight years ago and has done beautifully. No problems with gerd since then.

I have just joined the Mayo site because I am looking for the best way to deal with my acid reflux. I suppose it is GERD. I do not have heartburn. My symptoms are a cough with mucus, sensitive throat, constant clearing my throat, and my ears are now also affected. I am partially deaf with the sound echoing in my head as though I am on a flight and landing.
I have tried all the PPI's and other medications but they don't even help. Does anyone have similar symptoms and found a way to get rid of this horrible problem.

My G.I. doctor seems to feel some of these procedures are experimental but I know that Robert Wood Johnson did a clinical trial reply views and followed patients. Does anyone know more about this and locations that do it it looks like Nyu might. I’m in the New York metro area. I don’t know if Mayo does it. I also wonder if there are certain specifications for being a good candidate. I have failed peristalsis, limited or low les fucioning (Weak) and I 70. The trial may have been done with younger Patients limited to hernias.

Yes, ask your doctor about domperidone. This was the answer for me. It kick starts the stomach to do it’s job and completely digest all the food in the stomach. This along with sucralfate, a chalky substance that coats the esophagus and protects it from acid reflux has worked so well for me. I agree with you, PPIs are not the best help, however I do take one twice a day.

Thank you for this advice. I will certainly ask about this and give it a try. I have been at the end of my tether.

You can order Domperidone from Canada but probably need a Dr. Prescription. I have been taking it for 25 years but I live in Canada. It might not be available in the US. Worthwhile checking with your doctor to find out whether this is a medication that would be suitable for you. My GERD arose because my stomach contents were not emptying so esophageal problems and severe stomach pains were the result.
