Vibration

Has anyone had any success using a stand on vibration machine for strengthening bones and improving balance?

I have been using a standing vibration plate for about 5 years. I believe it has helped me stabilize my osteoporosis. This kind of machine was originally developed by the Russian space agency. When cosmonauts came back from long term space trips they had extremely low bone density due to lack of gravity. Using the vibration plates they reversed this condition over several months and returned to normal. Take into consideration that cosmonauts are probably very fit to start and much younger than most of us so they had that advantage. However, in my experience I was able to strengthen my core muscles and improve posture. An added bonus was my pelvic muscles tightened and ended stress incontinence. I know this vibration plate did that for sure because when I got too busy to get on the machine for a couple of weeks, my muscles weren't quite as reliable.

Hi @greyfox914, is the vibration plate you've been using high or low intensity? Could you share the name of it? I was using a high intensity vibration plate for 9 months, but stopped after watching Margare Martin's podcast on the dangers of high intensity vibration exercisers. Thank you.

For about 5 years I was on the plate for 10 minutes at maximum speed (50)--this machine was in the health food store owned by my best friend. I have since bought my own machine, cost was about $250. They have come down in price over the last couple of years and can be bought for about $150. The one I bought has a maximum speed of 99 and runs for 15 minutes. I'm not sure I was getting any stronger vibration than the original machine at 50. There is no explanation as to what these numbers mean. Is this the velocity of the vibration mechanism measured by some engineering terminology? I don't know.

Teri, it may not be for everyone so don't try something without your doctors' approval. My unit was made by LifePro. You select your intensity level. Anyone starting would want to start at low intensity. Actually, I found that even at a "1" I was getting a pretty good shaking and had sore stomach muscles the next day, which is a good thing. Doing it every day at low intensity has got to help.

Agree. I also have a LifePro and have learned that the optimum vibration is around 30Hz. I use mine once, sometimes twice a day for 10 minutes each. A max of 30 minutes is what is typically recommended.

Why did you chose Life Pro? have you had a DEXA scan since you started using it and has there been any improvement? Have you found that your legs stronger?
