yes, two years ago. I had to convince my doctor that something was going on and it wasn't old age alone. I am a very active woman who went from osteopenia to osteoporosis very quickly. Through urine tests and blood work, then an ultrasound of my parathyroids, it was discovered that one of the glands was over active and pulling calcium out of my bones. I did start Fosomax because my bone loss was sugnificant. After one year, my dexa scan showed that my bones were strengthening. I'm due for another dexa scan early next year. As for the surgery, I was happy to have it and recovered quickly. Good luck,

Thank you for replying. An ultrasound showed one of my glands to be slightly abnormal. I am having surgery Jan 20th. I have been on Prolia for three years. Before that Fosomax. I’ll let you know how everything goes.

After years of high blood calcium levels, kidney infections and passing stones my GP had me see a doctor practicing in hormonal balancing. After several test I had parathyroid surgery. I had growths in all 4 nodules. I very small section of the parathyroid was saved. My calcium levels are down to near normal now and I haven't had a kidney infection or stone in 3 years. One side effecf I was left with is moderately high bp.
I had parathyroid surgery with 1 adenoma removed. Too early to tell if osteo is improved. Dexa in 6 months. Osteo drugs will not help if you have hyperparathyroidism and there is no such thing as mild hyperparathyroidism you either have it ir you don't. The surgery is pretty easy. You need to go to a surgeon who does a lot of parathyroid surgeries. I flew to an expert Dr. Deva Boone in Phoenix, Arizona. She will also do a phone consult with you for around 425 dollars. Norman parathyroid center in Tampa, Fla have a website full of info. People go there from sll over the world. You can self refer to both if these Ces. Good luck!
Hello Geedle12. I followed up on your Oct 9 information about Dr. Deva Boone. As luck would have it, I'm in Phoenix so I spoke to her yesterday after reviewing her extensive library on HPT. Thank you so much again for this info, she seems like a great resource. Having blood tests/dexa soon and then an appt. with Endocrinologist to see if she agrees that I need surgery.
Have you felt better following surgery and are you taking osteo meds now? What kind of symptoms did you have after surgery, anything worrisome?
Thanks so much. Kolika

I'm seriously contemplating parathyroid surgery so I was happy to find your positive post about having the surgery. I too had a big drop in bone density, now considered severe. Currently not on any bone drugs until I sort out my current situation and surgery decision.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience as it's very helpful and encouraging.
Might I ask, if someone has high calcium levels, they can still have bone loss? This has been my situation. They just told me to start meds and my DEXA showed very severe soft bones that came on suddenly. After reading your post, it seems like parathyroid should be looked at? They did only labs and urine and told me it was fine. Was this the case with anyone else? How did you get an ultrasound and did that show something that labs alone did not? TY and I wish you all the best.

In my opinion you should definitely try to determine if you have hyperparathyroidism. I had all the tests you mentioned and had high calcium numbers but was told I did not have hyperparathyroidism. I was advised to proceed with anabolic meds. I was not comfortable taking the drugs and was not convinced that I did not have hyperparathyroidism. I got a telemedicine appointment with a prominent endocrine surgeon who after retesting me said I did have hyperparathyroidism and offered surgery. I continued to research the situation and have received another confirmation from a surgeon (mentioned positively in these posts) that I have hyperparathyroidism. My next step is to try and get an ultrasound of my thyroid for additional information. Your blood tests are the main determining factor. Good luck!

I'm so glad I could help. I hope you will see an improvement soon after surgery
