Gastroparesis.........Now What? Using a wedge pillow and new routine.

Posted by mikejjb123 @mikejjb123, Nov 24, 2022

I have Gastroparesis and doctor told me to use a wedge pillow and take my dexilant at night before bedtime. Been doing this about a month and I now have nausea for about 3 hours or so when I wake up in the morning. Try to quit eating by 8 pm ( a small snack usually) and not fresh fruit with skins. Any ideas to bring the nausea further under control? Seeing a nutritionist in a couple weeks. Thanks.

I have Gastroparesis and am not diabetic. Mine is rare.
Almost everyone who has this is diabetic. Don’t know how I was unlucky enough to have this monster of a condition!!

My GI nurse practitioner said that gastroparesis frequently has an unknown etiology in many patients. I too am not diabetic and was diagnosed 6 years ago. I am on Esomeprazole magnesium 40mg daily, follow a modified FODMAP diet, eat 5 small meals per day and try to exercise 3 days per week. I also have been diagnosed with a tortuous colon after my last colonoscopy and told to try and increase fiber intake… which is a little challenging with gastroparesis. Luckily I seem to be holding my own with these GI problems. I also keep CBD gummies on hand to help with occasional nausea. It’s taken me 10 years to find ways that keep these conditions under control. Luckily I have a great NP that listens and tries to help by suggesting ways to help. I wish you the best and hope things improve for you.

Hi,

I've had gastroparesis for a number of years, dating back to at least 2012. But I remember symptoms long before then (2012 was, I think my first hospitalization. I gravitate to foods that made me feel better-smoothies, etc.

As for meds, I'm running out of options. There's motegrity, which the insurance doesn't want to cover, or domperidone which none of the providers want to write for (they don't do out of the country). Many of the meds cause extrapyramidal side effects and I had to stop taking them. After a traumatic brain injury, weed began causing seizures, time to stop'!

Due to scar tissue the gastric stimulator isn't really an option either. The botox is an option. My GI here at home is putting in an expedtited referral back to Mayo in Rochester.

Not sure what to think, just trying to keep it positive.

I am at 40 mg a day. I have tried to reduce to 30 mg but it’s just not working for me. I need 40 mg for it to work effectively for me. I know at 30 mg which is the recommended dosage, there is less chance of heart problems. However my doctor said that if heart problems were to arise, I would know by now.

Do you take this all at once or thru the day? My daughter is taking 40 mg also, but dose is 10 mg 4 times a day. She has gotten it from Canada and also from her doc in US.

I take the Domperidone twice a day, 20 mg each time. I make sure to wait 30 minutes after taking it before eating a meal.

I'm not diabetic. Mine was caused by complications from surgery. Sometimes they just don't know the cause. Take care of yourself.

Since I haven’t had any surgery for over 50 years, that was pretty much ruled out.
And not being diabetic, we suspect that I may have injured my Vegas nerve in a fall around 5 years ago. I don’t think there is any “ iron clad” definition.

I also need to know if I should be lactose free as part of the Gastroparesis diet.
Prior to my diagnosis of Gastroparesis I was thought to have IBS C. My diet was both sugar free and dairy free.
Sugar no longer bothers me.
I really need to gain about 25-30 pounds.
