I tried Fosamax and was immobilized with muscle and joint pain for a week with the first dose. I was told symptoms would lessen with time so I tried a second dose the next week with the same painful results. After that I was not willing take another dose. Some people are able to tolerate the bisphosphonates and some are not.

Six months later I had a break in my leg bone just above the knee while walking. At that time I decided I needed to take something for the osteoporosis and was started on Evenity. At the end of one year on Evenity my DEXA scores moved from osteoporosis back into osteopenia. I had minimal side effects while on Evenity.

I strongly urge everyone to research all the alternative drugs for osteoporosis so you are making an informed decision. Here is one of many good articles on different drugs used for treating osteoporosis. This one is from Harvard Medical School:

Thanks. I have low bone density in my hips and my gyn prescribed ibandronate, another bisphosphonate, 3 years, probably because it is easy to take once a month. I did take the first dose and had nasty muscle pain for two weeks. The article you referenced indicates that it is not the medication of choice for the hips. Many opinions out there. My primary an internist, did not think a second opinion was warranted so I have resorted to Citrical and being more vigilant on my calcium intake. Also, I have switched to a different primary who might be more open minded about a second opinion.
