Tymlos side effects I've encountered

Posted by anniesan @anniesan, Oct 2, 2022

Hi. I started Tymlos in February 2022 and about a month after starting it I began experiencing excruciating muscle spasms, esp in upper thighs and feet, neuropathy, as well as debilitating hip, leg, and back pain. My doctor wanted me to try and stay on it for at least a year, but I absolutely could not go on living with the pain I experienced. I stopped taking the Tymlos completely 6 days ago and all my symptoms have subsided. Has anyone else experienced these side effects while on Tymlos?

Hi, @anniesan I have been on Tymlos since March of 2021 so I am approaching the end of two years. Initially, I really didn't have side effects but then after a while, I did have a couple. One of the most common is what people refer to as "puffy belly". It's actually fluid retention in your abdomen and does resolve after getting off Tymlos.

The other side effect I get off and on is achy legs and knees. It's interesting because I don't have them all of the time but then they will resume and I will have them for a week or more. I can only recall one week when my legs were aching so much that I was really in pain. The pain most of the time is tolerable. When it was bad I stopped for a few days - not long. My endocrinologist understood and said to not stop for too long. Stopping though did seem to sort of "reset" things so the pain was much less.

I am 77-yr old women and started Tymlos six weeks ago. I am noticing hair loss last week or so. Anybody has similar experience? Thanks

My friend said she was losing hair. I lose hair anyway 🙂

I guess I would rather lose hair than bone!

Did you start at full dose of 8 clicks? You could try a lower dose (like 4 clicks) and move up slowly and see if this side effect eases.

I have been on Tymlos for a year and still cannot tolerate 8 clicks, the full dose but am doing fine at 7 after ramping up.

Yes I had the same symptoms plus my hair was falling out but the pain was awful. Have started Fosamax in a pill and even that makes me nervous

I had great results with Tymlos. The only side effect I had was dizziness, so I did the injection in the evening. We are all different, so we have to do what works best for us. My bone density increased with it too.

Thank you. My plan was to slowly ramp up to minimize side effects, but I was just hoping there was maybe a path forward that didn't require a high/higher dose. I have a good doc. She will guide me, but anecdotal evidence and personal stories still help. PS: the drug still scares me.

I have been on Tymlos for 18 months. Staying with 6 clicks have been the best for me with no side effects. I have tried ramping it up but have bad nausea & some headache with more. Only 3 more months to go. I have a lot of jaw pain and am so nervous about deciding on something after Tymlos. Does anyone have any suggestions?

@txmom, good evening. I just wanted to pass along a hint about your next step after Tymlos.
With Tymlos you had an injection every day. That means you were not loading up your body once every six months or so. I also had no problems with Tymlos for two years.

However, when I tried Prolia, the six-month dosage was just too heavy for me. I had joint and jaw pain for the first 3 of the 6 months. So my endocrinologist took me off Prolia and put me on a weekly tablet of Alendronate. No pain, no side effects. An easy solution so far.
Worth looking into????

May you have comfort and ease.
Chris

Thank you so much, Chris. I have a lot of jaw pain with my arthritis without adding more. I will definitely mention this to my doctor.
