Hi Ling, I live in Hawaii and did hear about the report that said that is in the soil and water in hawaii. One of the people that did the tests is from Hawaii and works at NJH. She was so helpful for me that recommended an
ID doctor that worked for a number of years at NJH. So I switched doctors and it was so great that the course that Im taking, mostly nebulizing with 7% saline and working on getting sputum out is very important. So here in HI I mask all the time when I work in the yard or walk in heavy traffic. I will not drink the tap water unless I boil it first and when at a restaurant always ask for a cup of hot water or a bottled drink. careful if you shower outdoors in the park because they found MAC in that water. The sea
water seems ok in that its salt. And I like what Sue recently said, not to get too paranoid about using water like showering or brushing teeth. Watch the steam though. Hope you enjoy Hawaii, its a wonderful place to enjoy. Hal

I lived on the big island for 10 years, which is likely where I picked up NTM. I saw a report from BYU that linked NTM to the hematite (lava) type soils, as it really bonds/sticks to the rocky soil. Since I gardened like a maniac for years it was an ah-ha moment for me. I recently moved to the mainland. I’m sure I’ll make my way back someday.

Hi Hauoli,
Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience living in Hawaii. Every year we stay in Maui for some time in the winter. I was just diagnosed with bronchiectasis, I was scared and depressed until I found this community. I try to learn what I can and can't do in my life journey from now on. I do very much want to live a normal life. Your experience there is very helpful to me.
Mahalo!
