Severe Constipation

Posted by klk464 @klk464, Feb 28, 2018

I have had severe constipation for a long time. I drink lots of water and have had almost every test possible done and tried many prescription medications. These medications work for a little bit then stop. I currently take 3 docusate in morning and at night I will take 2 senna/docusate. I still dont have a daily BM. So i get bloated crampy and back pain from this.

I was told I could go to the Mayo Clinic as they may have ideas for me because they are out of options for me here.

Anyone else suffer from this?

I have had chronic constipation since birth. I am now 54 years old. I have ran out of laxatives to try. I went to a gastroenterologist a couple of years ago who did a marker test (nothing moved) and then attempted to do a colonoscopy but I told him beforehand that the solution did not clean me out so of course it came back inconclusive because it wasn’t cleaned out. He diagnosed me with colonic inertia and prescribed Linzess which sort of worked for a while then it started making me nauseous and not working. I started taking Miralax every day at the suggestion of a different doctor, that worked for a while and now it just makes me sick and doesn’t work either. I have an appointment with yet another gastroenterologist next month. I go weeks without a bowel movement sometimes 4-6 weeks and of course I feel miserable. Anyone else have the same issue?

@denisepowell - Movicol is a new product to me so I did a brief web hunt. https://www.movicol.com.au/about-movicol/how-it-works/
Am I right in guessing that Macrogol, its active ingredient is similar to Miralax, but perhaps sold in Australia? Movicol added electrolytes, maybe to reduce its sodium/potassium/other? mineral losses. My source was Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrogol
Have you found it helpful? Is Movicol sold in the U.S?

Hi ZeeGee - Somehow I thought that greens were leafy green veggies like spinach, chard, kale, collards, mustard, choys, even arugula and parsley. However, there are products sold named
Athletic Greens - with a capital "G", not a lower case "g" -
https://www.amazon.com/Athletic-Greens-Supplement-Certified-GlutenFree/dp/B084GZNKZQ
or Super Greens.
Has anyone here found either to be helpful with constipation?

The leafy green foods, which I loved .. I cannot eat anymore. They take a very long time for me to digest or they don't digest. I have swallowing problems. I don't do well with pills either. I had another swallowing test this week. The barium got me constipated. So had to take good old reliable for me Milk of Magnesia. Everyone is different in what works for them. Having swallowing and digesting problems make it difficult to eat properly. I am surviving though.

Do you exercise? I found lots of fruit works best for me. If I miss a day, it's not good. The "P" fruits best: prunes, pineapples, pears, plums

Absolutely! It's the best recommendation that I was EVER given. I'm 71 years old, female, and only discovered this in the last year. It has made my existence and being able to live and feel better SO much better! I highly recommend Prunelax. Jacque

On kale, collards, turnip greens, etc, cut out the stems with a kitchen scissors and cook longer. Also, you can juice them fresh. You can also food process them into a baby food consistency.
