PET Results - Pre-potential whipple treatments
After 6 rounds of chemo to shrink pancreatic tumor in head of pancreas; My father in law PET scan showed a hot spot on his liver so today they dissected most of the lesion from the liver ; mass felt firm with a mucinous component; They then irrigated peritoneal cavity to get a sample; both will be sent off for analysis I guess to determine in the pancreatic cancer has spread and to determine if they could then do the whipple procedure. From what I understand they will not do the whipple surgery if the cancer has spread; Next week will be a big week of results and then understanding the next options for treatment; We were all hopeful that he could just get the surgery but then numerous obstacles keep getting the way. Hopeful but... if he can not have the surgery I think he may stop chemo for it really has been hard on him and he is getting a bit discouraged...

The human physical and emotional toll of this disease is too much….😔
I am sorry for the emotions you must be going through. Do you have any options to possibly go to a Mayo Clinic for a second opinion?
We have been going to Mayo Clinic since February. We have had nothing but good things to say about their care but unfortunately his disease has continued to progress.
What stage were you when you had surgery?
This was all at Mayo in Rochester.
@mamarina I was diagnosed as 2b. The tumor on my pancreas was the size of a small grapefruit and 1 lymph node tested as positive for cancer.
Thank you for your reply. How are you doing? Your whipple went well?
@mamarina For 5 years, the scans showed no evidence of disease. My scan at 5 1/2 years showed that my cancer had returned. That was almost 3 years ago. Because of complications from my chemo treatments in 2014, we decided to do 25 rounds of radiation and no chemo. PET scans in the last 3 years have shown that the cancer is not growing or spreading at this time.
You may have answered this before but what stage were you when you had the whipple?
@mamarina I was Stage 2b.
