What's the difference between proton vs traditional radiation?

I want to add that a proton beam can miss spots of cancer. It did so in my case. I have now metastasized to stage four. In retrospect a little more damage might’ve been worth it to have gotten rid of cancer in the early stages. Proton beam is better and is more accurate, but if they miss a couple cancer cells and it starts all over again? What the hell? All you bought was a couple of years.

@mamarina : I just emailed Dr. Chuong over the weekend to introduce myself for possible treatment. Has he done many prostates on the MRIdian machine?

After researching, as a layman, the many radiation treatments, it came down to Proton or the MRIdian radiotherapy. I also spoke with oncologists who have used both. My “feel” was that the MRIdian was a better fit for me as, in terms of protecting healthy tissue, if you can see it you have a better chance to treat it. it is a real time MRI attached to a radiation machine. Second, the machine automatically stops if the radiation goes outside the target mapping parameters. Third, the target map PLUS the margins they add to limit the radiation to protect healthy tissue is narrower with the MRIdian than proton so it supposedly reduces the amount of radiation hitting healthy tissue. I was also told to have spaceoar gel inserted which adds about 1/2 inch space between the rectum and the prostate.

I am not sure on the prostates. I have pancreatic. But I do know they do various cancers i am scheduled to talk to him Thursday afternoon , I can ask if you dont hear from him before hand

They do mrgrt proton for prostate. However, there are 2 other Drs at MCI that specialize in prostate not dr Chuong
