Nausea from Tymlos

Posted by bayhorse @bayhorse, Oct 10, 2022

I have been encouraged to keep injecting Tymlos because my osteoporosis is pretty bad. However, I have been on it for several months now, and am still having nausea for at least two hours after I inject it. I am worried that having this kind of persistent side effect means I shouldn't be on this drug, but my rheumatologist tells me I shouldn't be concerned. It is, however, taking my Tymlos has become a dreaded daily event. Has anyone had this kind of experience with a persistent side effect from Tymlos? And any suggestions? Anti-nausea drugs like Zofran tend to knock me out or make me woozier!

Zofran should not be used for long, according to my doc.

I had nausea for awhile but it faded. I switched to morning and take calcium 2-3 hours before (someone suggested not taking it closer). I eat a half sandwich just before the shot.

Are you taking a full dose? Try going to a half dose (4 clicks of the pen) and move up slowly. At each level wait until this side effect is better.

I have been on Tymlos for a year and at first spent time in bed after the shot. Strangely, I have felt better the last three months after getting active right after the shot.

Everyone is different. Bottom line is that we need this med at this point. After fracturing I will go through just about anything to stay on it! But luckily at 7 clicks I am now fine. Still cannot do 8.

Thanks for your suggestion about the dose change. I would never have thought of it.

I've learned to take it after a full meal -- that helps sometime, though not always. Had not heard about timing it apart from calcium, so will give that a try as well.

Just want you to know that my doc totally approved of my ramping up, and was even happy with 6 clicks if that was all I could do.

I have been on tymlos for 9 months and I have the same nausea symptoms as above. Also heart palpitations after I take it. I never thought to decrease the dose and have been doing 8 since the start. Thank sor the suggestion! Honestly I really want to stop it, but I also do not want any more broken bones.

@rbp ask your doc if you can go down to 6 out of 8 clicks, which my doc said was therapeutic and indeed I had significant improvements with 6 or 7. It's weird that going just one click to 8 made it intolerable. Also weird that for this last month, I am fine with 8 and almost done! I hope you can continue! I was also told the first 6 months has the most impact, then a slightly less impact for the next 6 months. Dr. McCormick told me that at 17 months it is no longer really working according to blood tests. I can't confirm that but I believe him and am finishing after this month. Good luck!

I am using Tymlos for 9+ months. Over the last two weeks, I experienced two chipped and cracked teeth (both with fillings). Has anybody experienced any tooth issues?
- I am going to check with dentist, who can compare my X Ray image, to determine if it's just coincidence.
- I am also going to check with endo if I should cut down the dose. Recently, I heard a talk by Dr Fishman (Osteoporosis and Yoga) when he showed a graph indicating that Tymlos after a year of treatment is not as effective. Thanks

Gratefully I can now understand my morning stomach restlessness. My a.m. med schedule is
6:00 a.m. - 40mg diuretic, omeprazolee and 650 tylenol. ( I usually fall back to sleep!) 8:00 a.m. begins with my injection of TYMLOS, eye drops, Cosopt inhaler and nine various pills. I also have G.E.R.D. which complicates the picture.
My undescribable stomach upset began 1 yr after back surgery and diagnosis of severe osteoporosis. My stomach and throat are dry and feel full and scream at me "No food or water!"
My bones look like Swiss cheese ergo the need for Tymlos.
I sit at my computer for a couple of hours until my body is ready for the day.
I learned from your heartfelt post My big mistake with Tymlos. I'll have the nurse redo the order plus breakfast
I take my calcium at noon.
I need to rethink my food and pill schedule

My understanding from McCormick and my doc is that Tymlos does not affect teeth but confirm with your endo. Dentists don't always seem to know this.
