Joe - This used to be true. Much smaller doses of steroids are now used, and decisions are mad based on the joint treated, span of time and dosage required. I had over 6 injections in my thumb joint over several years, and there was no marked deterioration when they finally did surgery.

Thanks for the update Sue. Very good to know. I've had both knees successfully replaced, but have osteoarthritis in my right shoulder. I'll probably get the shots as needed when the pain amps up.
