Prolia Not Available?

Posted by dchfl @dchfl, Oct 5, 2022

I just completed a one-year treatment with Evenity for osteoporosis and my Rheumatologist wants me to now start Prolia. However, her office just notified me that Prolia is currently unavailable and it may be months before they can get it. Has anyone else been told this?

Wow I hope that is not true since that’s what your dr wants for you. How did Evenity work for you? Did your Dexa scan improve? Did you have any side effects? I chose not to go on Prolia and am going for a second opinion to start the Evenity . Hoping you had positive results.

@dchfl - Hmm, this is the first time I have heard this, so I went searching. As far as I can tell, there is no reported shortage of Prolia (or the generic, denosumab or the other similar drug, Xgeva.)

The only thing I can figure out is maybe she put the order in & your insurance rejected it for some reason. I would ask her for a better explanation. If it is an insurance issue, it may be that there are "hoops" to jump through first or an appeal may need to be filed.

PS - People, it is Medicare supplement season again - remember to check any changes by your current provider that may affect your coverage next year, and do the same with any changes you are considering. Specifically check to be sure your provider & and current medications will continue to be covered.

The Evenity worked very well for me (see below). I was lucky that I did not have any side effects. I am going to get a second opinion about going on Prolia and to check on availability.

Spine before: -4.6
Spine after: -3.4
Femoral neck before: -2.9
Femoral neck after: -2.5
Total hip before: -2.3
Total hip after: -1.7

That’s quite an improvement. I’m happy for you. I thought my spine at -3.6 was bad so you really needed to see results👍😊 Good luck with your next phase of this lovely treatment we are facing

@dchfl - it sounds like it is just “not available” to you because your medical insurance plan doesn’t cover the cost. With so many people (I included) having gone off it, there should be ample supply left.

I got a shot two weeks ago 🤷🏻‍♀️

How are you doing now?

Any side effects?

Pain or hair loss?

Hope all is well!

I just went onto Prolia 3 weeks ago. So far I have no side effects but it is early.
