Our situation was quite different. He had Ampulary cancer, a rare type. Whipple was performed within 2 weeks of surgery and chemo, which was presented as optional, didn’t start until after five months. At that time we knew that we would be dealing with cirrhosis to further complicate the treatment. So far, one round of chemo has been completed with 5 remaining. His second PET scan is mid-October and we will have a better idea of what’s happening.
From my vantage point, Whipple is complicated and requires a long and sometimes complicated recovery. Our surgeon told us that ‘he would be playing golf ina month’ which was totally untrue. I would have much preferred the truth rather than to have to face the disappointment of false optimism.
