My husband was using a walker for a few months after his hip repair. Now he uses a cane. I remember having lots of pain and inflammation with my knee surgery. I went to Physical Therapy everyday for four months and used crutches for that period. (I was in my late 20s). One day I snapped at my mother and she told me to take the pain pills. At that time, it was aspirin with codeine. Taking them made a difference, at least, diminished the pain.

I can understand that. Thanks for sharing so i don't feel like I'm going downhill. It is more painful than I had anticipated. I was reading that taking Aleve and acetominephen together is OK, so while I take the Tylenol, I may add the Aleve to that.

When I had a serious back injury, I tried not to take painkillers until the physical therapist pointed out that they have a positive role in healing so trying to 'tough it out' as I was doing was counter-productive. Her point was that the body can become so pain-sensituzed that it begins to expect pain at the first sign of little twinge and tends to 'freeze up' in anticipation of pain. That, in turn, can create more stress and muscle tension. So becoming less aware of pain can be a good thing.

I took some painkillers for a short while and it really did help break the cycle until I started using a TENS unit which was my security blanket and best buddy for the year while my back was healing.
