Living alone ( all 3 kids and families-out- of- state)….forces us to start/ maintain local connections and friendships…. Both for social stuff… and support if needed. Getting together for coffee or lunch is a social bonus. Being able to drive helps with that feeling of independence….. but local services may be available…. And there are cabs. Senior activities are worth investigating. ………hjtk

I understand the 'forces us to start / maintain local connections', yes. Social stuff and support. I find this difficult.
I wanted to learn how to drive but never mastered that craft, my life was too complicated. All my energy went into survival and not actually living and enjoying things. This is the reason why I find this such a difficult situation. On the outside I am happy and fun though!

I'm in the same spot with family 1200 miles away and widowed last year. Fortunately I can drive, am a member of a local civic club, and have a couple of retired friends. I also have a few work friends that have offered to help, but I more hesitant to ask a coworker for help.
