Getting your first appointment

Posted by amkaloha @amkaloha, Dec 29, 2016

I have so many questions about this. Do I have to have a PCP referral to make an appointment? How about health records? I have many problems, the most prevalent right now is swollen legs and feet and have been seeing a few doctors in my area but no one seems to be able to help. I have had sonogram tests (blood movement is fine with no clots), an echocardiogram (heart is working well), but my legs stay swollen and stiff. I also have terrible pain in my knees due to osteoarthritis and neuropathy in both legs (I have to use a walker). Must I diagnose myself? - how do i know which department at Mayo to start with? This is in addition to if they will take my Medicare and BCBS. Mayo has such a great reputation that I just feel they could help me get my life back. Thanks to anyone with any answers or ideas.

We have a similar situation in our family and I am not sure the best route to make an appointment. We have seen multiple specialists who have prescribed medications for multiple symptoms, but no clear diagnosis or route. How do we determine the best Dr. to make an appt with and not get pigeon-holed? Do you have a Dr. House? LOL.

@ishaa, when making an appointment, you do not have to decide which doctor or department. Start by filling out the form online https://onlineservices.mayoclinic.org/NewAppointments/

You will be asked 4 things, namely your
1. Patient Information
2. Primary Concern
3. Insurance Details
4. Wrap Up

If you prefer to talk with someone to guide you through the process you can also request an appointment by phone. Find more information here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

I’m not sure if this is the right answers place to ask. Husband has a history of cancer in parotid gland (5 yrs) bypass surgery (25 yrs), and on-going COPD (severe). Past winter has struggled with weakness and shortness of breath. Also passed out twice. The past two months he’s seen pulmonologist and lung function test showed no change from last year. Vascular to check his damaged/blocked carotids, also stable and no charge from last year. Now a cardiologist. Echo and stress test showed no blockage. Currently on a heart monitor. We are not getting anywhere with anyone at our current medical center. Where do we even start if we were to change to Mayo? Husband doesn’t want to start the testing process all over again. Please help!!

Hi @jo858wi, welcome. I moved your question to the Visiting Mayo Clinic group to this existing discussion:
- Getting your first appointment https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/getting-your-first-appointment/

I did this so you can connect with others who have talked about getting an appointment at Mayo Clinic. Click this link http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63 to go to the Appointments page on Mayo's website.

On this page, you'll find all the information you need to know as well as frequently asked questions. To start, you can either fill in the simple online form or call Mayo Clinic during business hours to schedule a time to talk to an appointment scheduler.

Here's some additional information about filling out the form since it is now the weekend.
- You can fill out the form on your husband's behalf.
- The form is divided into 4 sections:
1. Patient Information: name, contact info, etc.
2. Primary Concern: 300 character limit to describe the main reason you wish to be seen at Mayo Clinic.
3. Insurance Details: optional, not required to submit the form
4. Wrap Up: 300 characters to tell us anything else you'd like Mayo to know.
– You can select a day and time to be called back to talk with the scheduler.

You can learn more info in this discusion too:
- Appointment Process: How can I request an appointment at Mayo? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/appointment-process/

Depending on the tests your husband has had and how recent they are, he may not have to have them redone. Fellow members explain in more details about submitting files and tests in this discussion:

I started by applying to internal medicine clinic. I answered some questions that were emailed to me. Then they accepted me for internal medicine. Then i said i would be on cancellation list where they call when somebody cancels. I got appointment quickly. Then its a physical and they make you catch up on preventives. Had first mammogram ever. But then they make appointments for consultations depending on your physical. I went to endocrinology, sleep medicine, gynecology, and had my hearing and vision checked. They are very through at Mayo Clinic. But you do have to get accepted as a patient.

Hello, I am preparing to apply to be seen at Mayo for numerous autoimmune issues amongst other health issues. I have a question…when you mentioned, “ I went to endocrinology, sleep medicine, gynecology, and had my hearing and vision checked” how long was the span of time in which you were seen in these various consultations? I’m wondering if I’m looking at numerous trips to Mayo or if they try to do it over one long extended stay? Thank you in advance for your help! I hope you are feeling better soon ✌️❤️

The length of time you will need to stay and if everything can be done in one visit will depend on your situation and appointment availability.

Typically, based on information from you or your medical records, they will have your initial appointments / tests schedule. After your initial appointment, more appointment with other specialists and tests may be added.

Whenever possible they are very efficient in scheduling appointments / tests. Because all testing are done at Mayo, results are usually available in less than 24 hours.

But, the demand for some appointments and tests exceeds available appointments. So, if no appointments are available during your visit, you may need to extend your stay or return.

I live in MN and many of my friends and family who are already Mayo patients are having longer waits then usual to get appointments.

As my wife is a patient at Mayo and has recently had liver transplant surgery, we spend a lot of time there and I have come to appreciate the care she has been given over the last 8 years and receives currently. I applied for an appointment online about a week ago and was told (during the online process) that I would hear something within 3 business days. Was that time frame an average or an estimate?

@usdiplomat, typically you will receive a call from a scheduling coordinator between 3-5 business days. It sounds like it has been longer than that in your case. I recommend calling on Monday morning at the Mayo campus you submitted the request to and follow up.

Here are the numbers:
Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona
480-301-8484
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mountain time, Monday through Friday

Jacksonville, Florida
904-953-0853
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Eastern time, Monday through Friday

Rochester, Minnesota
507-538-3270
7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Central time, Monday through Friday

Thanks, I'll do that. Since she's over there usually 1-2 days a week and sometimes more, it just makes more sense for me to go there also instead of driving all over Jacksonville and often having to change my appointments accordingly. Cheers!

I see an endocrinologist at Mayo Clinic-Rochester. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in 2007 but I only starting seeing him about five years ago. My A1C is 6.5 and my fasting blood glucose averages 120. My endocrinologist has been so helpful. He is current on new medications, very helpful in terms of insurance, and keeps me on task in terms of diet and exercise.
