Advice for Spouse whose husband has type 2

Posted by peperomia @peperomia, Aug 5, 2022

My husband has type 2 and eats whatever he wants. He eats very poorly. Soda, chocolates, ice cream, fried foods, pizza, etc. It doesn't matter to him. He has a Dexcom and just injects more insulin when it warns him his sugars are too high. He has a can of pop and a candy bar if his sugars are too low. What can I expect as far as his health? Is it OK to live like this when you have diabetes or will it catch up to him at some point? I always thought you shouldn't have all of the processed sugars and carbs.

Hello @peperomia, Welcome to Connect. I think you are right to be concerned. Type 2 diabetes is serious and can develop into things much worse. My younger sister who is no longer alive had type 2 diabetes and almost had to have one of her feet amputed due to diabetes. She was one like your husband that didn't make any lifestyle changes. I think the good news is that there is hope and if you can convince your husband to make a few changes like you mentioned, it will improve his health.

Here's some information from the American Diabetes Association that you may find helpful:

Sadly, I was much like your husband but I was only diagnosed as prediabetic. My wife helped me when she started doing intermittent fasting to lose a little weight. Then she convinced me it works and I should try it. Is your husband open to listening to you?

With poor eating habits his diabetes will get progressively worse as time goes on. I have been able to control my diabetes by diet and intermittent fasting. Read “The Diabetes Code” by Dr. Jason Fung.

This should of been a wake up call to him to change his lifestyle but some people just don't care. When he gets complications he might change then. Sounds like heart disease is coming due to his diet. Keep on him to change.

I can tell you its not a good idea. I didn’t eat sweets to excess, my downfall was fruit and carbs. Anyway, the course is not a good one. I don’t want to scare you but it sounds like he’s not taking it seriously.

I suggest you read up on diabetes complications and if you do the cooking modify the diet you or he prepares by changing it at the front lines (the grocery store). I’m telling you its not worth what ever he is doing to keep hurting himself. I don’t want you to have a rude awakening, but this will most def. progress if he does not change his lifestyle. I recently changed diet to be low carb and low sugar. I’m consuming fruits low in sugar, strawberry’s, watermelon, peaches, etc. He could drink Orange juice to bring his sugars up IE: insulin. Start going for walks (if you don’t). I miss that terribly. I used to walk with my husband every day and I cannot now due to neuropathy. It affects the entire body. It can really mess with you. He should get an eye exam for diabetics too. Check cholesterol. He needs to see the doctor and listen to what they say. If he does not and refuses your imposing a better diet on him, then prepare yourself for the worst, because diabetes is a powder keg. Stay strong. Rely on this group for help. Your personal doctor. He can’t keep doing the same thing expecting different results. You both need support. IMHO.
