Lapiplasty bunion surgery

Posted by deb1966 @deb1966, Jun 23, 2022

Does anybody know somebody that had the lapiplasty bunion surgery? Does Mayo Rochester do them? I had one done and the surgeon was wonderful he did good, but the hardware and procedure is what I’m questioning 🤨

Hi @deb1966 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
Dr. Shi at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville Florida is a specialist in bunions and would be a good doctor to check out.

What type of hardware did your doctor use and what are you questioning regarding it?

Hello @neshatsoofi and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Here is some information that you may find useful, although I am only seeing one doctor in Jacksonville, FL currently who treats bunions.

I would recommend requesting an appointment to be sure, however. If interested, you may use this link: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

How long have you been dealing with bunions?

I have recently seen three doctors to plan for bunion surgery - they all seem to offer different methods. Any advice on comparing and contrasting the different methods or finding a doctor in the Dallas Fort Worth area that does all of the methods, or is that not customary? How does one really know what to do if each doctor is proposing a different surgery procedure? Any guidance or thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello. I had the lapidus 3D procedure for bunion correction at Mayo - Rochester. I was extremely happy with the whole process and care. My only question, (and the thing I'm researching for my 2nd foot) is when the actual Lapiplasty hardware is used, does that decrease healing time. When I read about recovery from the name brand Lapiplasty procedence (specific hardware), the patients are starting to bear weight within a month. Fir my procedure (which used screws) I wasn't allowed to start weight bearing at all until the 7th week. I won't be full weight bearing until the 11th week. I'm wondering if the patented hardware in Lapiplasty allows patients to get back to activities sooner. Or is my surgeon just extra cautious (which is ok). Just researching my options.

I had the Lapidus 3D correction procedure at Mayo in Rochester. They did a great job and communication was great. They don't have the proprietary Lapiplasty hardware, however. They use screws. I'm 8 weeks out and went into a boot at 6 weeks out. I am at 50 % weight bearing and will be on crutches a couple more weeks. I am wondering if the Lapiplasty hardware offers a shorter recovery time. Does anyone know?
