Does anyone know of a medication to relieve symptoms of IBS?

@sage50

There is a natural and safe supplement that I take that soothes colon pain, gas, constipation , and diarrhea.
It is peppermint oil/ginger,fennel combo...its sold at cvs in the colon area marked " peppermint oil for ibs"... it is very soothing for the nausea and stomach pain.
Please ask your Dr 1st please though, even though it's just natural herbs. I don't want to be in conflict with what rx they give you.
Also...and this I know for a fact bc it's coming straight from my gi Dr....probiotics work big time...but you have to give them a good 2 weeks to take effect. High count...15 billion....multi strain...put in fridge once opened.
Also..yogurt..fermented foods.
Look up colon friendly diet. What we eat, or TRY to eat , which can be hard, is extremely important. We need to give our gi system a chance to heal...avoid all fatty foods....it hates them...avoid gluten..most people with gi issues can't break down gluten...even though they might not necessarily have celiac disease. I have chrohns disease...and was told to my surprise people with that can't break it.
Also...we become nutrition deficient...I take glucerna sent to me from my nutrition dept.at the VA. It's low in sugar, easy on the stomach, and gets those vites and protein back into u.
Yes...plenty of water too. Yes.
And ginger chews helps nausea 2.
I've thrown out all I can think of 4 now to try and help....I hope it makes a difference. Be well. Peace.
Audrey. %^)

When I have an attack, I eat only plain white rice and drink strong fennel tea. These, along with my trusty heating pad, work for me.

To all with IBS-D. I was defecating four times a day. With all kinds of pain, gas, and bloating. The Fodmap food list helps with my symptoms and my doctor told me the reason that we have diarrhea is due to bile in our stool and put me on Colestipol. I only defecate two times a day with occasional pain and bloating. I know that everyone’s systems are different but, thought that it might help others.

What is the diet that takes away your symptoms?

I find a low fiber diet more comforting to my abdomen than a high fiber diet. And the dicyclomine 20 mg is wonderful for abdominal pain. I don't have the dizzyness or lethargy that some people experience on this drug.
I found an article on the internet from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. I searched SIBO diet. The title of the diet is Low Fermentation Diet/SIBO Diet. The article describes the details of how the digestive system and nervous system work before going into the specifics of the diet.
I am going to discuss it with my GI next time I see her. Unfortunately my next appointment isn't for 2 months.
Still waiting for biopsy results from colonoscopy.

Ohh I also forgot to mention the Ginger tea that I have been drinking as well. You can buy ground ginger if you do not find the root. Boil the water on the stove pour the ground ginger in a tall glass when the water is boiling pour it the glass over the ground ginger then place a lid or plate over it to cover it while it seeps for 10 or 15 minutes pour the tea into another glass leaving the residue in the bottom of first glass. Then add sweeter and possible lemon for taste. I drank it every other day.

I forgot to mention the most important part that I do not experience diarrhea at all it is only soft serve. that stress will inflame your symptoms. I went to an atrocious experience with working offshore due to living with the people I worked with. Anti anxiety medicine Helps as well.

I drink hot peppermint tea every day and couple of times a day. I is very soothing. I also drink ginger tea. It’s very good for you too. I’ve stated taking IB Gard. It’s also peppermint capsules you take before meals 3x a day. My gastroenterologist suggested it also. Over the counter and can be bought in bulk on line.
If any one has had REAL success with the FODMAP diet please let me know. My doctor told me he has only had 1 patient that washable to stay on it for 6 months and then gave it up.

I have been on low fodmap for 2 years and I consider it a life saver! I have been able to figure out what I can and can not eat. I don’t always stick to (other then no dairy and onions) but if I’m working I do. I also do 16 hr fastings everyday that I’m working.

Theres a really good set of pages on the NHS about IBS. Even includes a dieticians video and an app you can use if you like. The FODMAP diet really has helped me. The initial pain was so severe that I was being sent for scans in case it was appendix or ovaries trying to explode on me again! When the pain gets bad I use Buscopan, which can be available on prescription. When I am taking a break for a holiday etc, and want to relax the diet a little, then I use peppermint oil or tea, or sauerkraut or other probiotics. The probiotics that are best for you, depend on if you have IBS type C, D or A.

I guess, like the yay in AA and NA, are you willing to do whatever it takes? dunno, fasting for sixteen hours would be hard for me. I did read somewhere that three square meals, rather than a bunch of smaller ones, which is usually recommended, sometimes works better, because it fits in in with the cycles of the tummy's digestive "waves" not medical advice, your mileage may vary
