Sunburn?
Seven months ago, suddenly and violently, my skin began to hurt as though it were badly sunburned. I don’t go out in the sun (melanoma 22 yrs ago).
Dermatologist informed me it was not a skin issue. Primary care Dr. Sent me to a Neuro Doc.
Five months of pain, then Dr. Neuro tells me I have small fiber neuropathy, likely permanent, though some cases have lasted only a couple of years. He gave me pregabalin, which has relieved 75-90% of the pain, but leaves me feeling drowsy and I fatigue easily.
Another doctor (friend of mine) heard that Naltrexone and Lion’s Mane have been helpful to others with similar pain.
Last week, desiring to be clear headed again, skipped a pregabalin dose and the pain came roaring back. So bad.
I would love your recommendations for treatment, tolerance, and how to find acceptance that this is my new normal.

Glad that pregabalin relieves your pain. I have been on it for over 5 yrs. After an adjustment period I have no side effects and don’t feel sleepy even though I take a high dose. Maybe your system will adjust over time.
Thank you for your great news, and for giving me hope.
Thanks, y’all for posting helpful hints. I have one to share. I kinda wish I didn’t, because now my wife is saying, “I told you so.” (She likes saying that)
My wife told me to take cold showers (not what you want to hear from your wife!) and do Wim Hof breathing exercises. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/
I’ve been doing it for two weeks now and I have to admit it is helping with my (whole body) SFN burning.
I’ll keep it up and let you know my progress.
Covid Cured My SFN
This may be my last post, folks. I've been cured.
It was suspected that the covid vaccine may have triggered my small fiber neuropathy (all of my skin feeling as though it was badly sunburned). I have been taking pregabalin to deaden the nerves and lessen the pain. It worked, but left me frustratingly drowsy. I have a demanding career, so drowsiness doesn't fit in very well.
Just 8 months after developing SFN, I caught the covid virus. It hit me pretty hard, and 12 days later, when the virus was gone, so was my SFN. I still have some lingering symptoms, but they are tolerable and I no longer need meds. Yay!
@notasunburn, I’m glad that your SFN symptoms have subsided. I moved your newest message to the original discussion you started.
Very happy for you to have made it through Covid and SFN! Amazing how both conditions affect people differently. Do you still use the whimsofmethod?
Yes, because I found benefit in the wimhofmethod of breathing exercises and cold showers, I will keep it up. I still have some SFN symptoms.
Do you have any idea what may have caused your burning pain?
There is no way to tell, but my suspicion is that my SFN was triggered (not caused) by the covid vaccine. This has not been verified by any med pros.
And, 8 months later it was cured by getting the covid virus.
The burning and pain are confined to just my feet. But I have degrees of numbness, all the way up to my face.
