Candida

Does anyone have any information on how medical doctors treat Candida? Are there any tests that can be run?
Are their medications that work?

jgalello, candida is a tough nut to crack. You mentioned red dots on your skin and itchy that may also be from a vitamin C deficiency and
borderline thyroid issues, chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety that are symptomatic of a thiamine deficiency (vitamin B1). Thiamine and vitamin C are needed in overall health and fighting candida.. Thiamine has a critical role in digestive health and function which if further impacted by insufficient levels of magnesium causing a deficiency of thiamine because it and vitamin D require magnesium to become bioactive. Benfotiamine is a fat soluble form of thiamine that can pass through the blood/brain barrier easier than water soluble thiamine forms. Liposomal vitamin C offers high absorption and long activity. Please research these forms of thiamine and vitamin C. I hope these links offer more answers you are looking for:

Would anyone be able to guide me as to how I should go about making an appointment with a specialist who could help me? Are there certain Mayo locations that focus on immunology and my type of issues? I tried calling the Jacksonville FL location and haven't been able to get through. Is the initial appointment now through video and then an in-person appointment is scheduled?

Major brands are, as a group, offering trusted products. Many differ with the form of the vitamin or mineral in addition to the fillers, if used, that may cause a reaction. ConsumerLab offers product testing in addition to indepth information you can utilize to increase your nutritional knowledge.

jgalello, I want to return to finish answering your question as I had an interruption. I like Bestvite's Benfotiamine because of minimal fillers and I favor liposomal vitamin C because it lasts longer, offers better absorption and protects against vitamin C irritation. Liposomal delivery increases absorption levels that otherwise would be ineffective. Curcumin is a good example. I also like olive leaf extract by East Park. Dosage is an individual matter depending if it's for maintenance or a health issue in addition to other factors such as weight and age. You would benefit consulting a health care professional for the best levels to use as a Herxheimer or Die-Off symptoms could result from using high levels too soon.

I have been struggling with candida for over 8 years now. At first I thought it was just chronic yeast infections but after going to multiple gyn's and getting no relief i started going to functional doctors. I've been to 4 functional doctors where I have found out I have celiac disease, allergy to casein, adrenal fatigue, and borderline thyroid issues. I've taken nystatin, and tried the candida diet for 3 weeks with antifungal herbs but it just keeps coming back. I am constantly itchy all over by body (vaginal, eyes, ears, scalp, all over). I get red dots on my skin when it flares up usually on my stomach and armpits. I've also been struggling with chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety, I used to work in a sick building where I was exposed to mold and other toxins that showed up on tests. I'm not sure if I have been able to clear the mold and toxins from my body yet and if that is also fueling the candida. I am so discouraged and upset that its so hard to find a doctor who cares to get to the bottom of this. I feel like I'm at the end of the line and don't know where else to go and what type of doctor can help me next. I am starting to wonder if IV therapy for candida is effective and if i should look into that. Does anyone know of any doctors around Baltimore Maryland who specialize in candida? At this point i am willing to travel any where if it means I can find relief from this.

I’m currently seeing Silvia Hazel, nurse practitioner. She’s getting her functional medicine license soon. She seems to really care to get to the bottom of things.

@richardbuckner I am having the same issue. It took me almost a year to find a doctor who believed me and treated me for intestinal candida. I got it after a round of antibiotics in October of 2017.

I was told only immunocompromised people get it which isn't true. I know other 'healthy' people who have gotten it.

I was put on Nystatin 2x a day. I took it for 4 months, but it wasn't effective and now the infection has returned. I don't know what else to do? Candida is a terrible thing to get and no one seems to know what to do which is scary. It is very hard to live my life. I'm constantly drained, insomnia, headaches, chemical sensitivity, I can't eat most things.

I too fear this is going to be a life time battle. I want to try voriconozole 1x a week for 6 months. I had a friend who received similar treatment. I can pulse with that medicine because if I take it every day longer term I get bad side effects.

I went to Mayo in AZ for this issues 12 years ago. The GI had no idea what it was but I noticed that Rochester is now treating this at least has clinical trials. They didn't take me.

I have been looking for a MD to treat my candidiasis. I worked with functional medicine doc for 3 years. Diet, Nystatin, Difulcan but never enough to get rid of it although have tests confirmed candida in my blood and stools also thrush. I know in my eyes and ears.
Will Mayo treat this? I worked with GI doctor in AZ he admitted 10 years ago that he didn’t know what it was. He sent me to internist but I am on Medicare so He would not treat me. Has this changed? Ir is there someone who will treat me now or someone in Denver?
