Hip muscle repair

Posted by jrlynch @jrlynch, Aug 4, 2021

I have torn several muscles in my hip. The Medius muscle is totally severed. My surgeon is combining that surgery with hip replacement. Would like to know if others have had similar surgeries and more importantly, how long before muscle repair healed!

Can you share how you completely severed your medius muscle?

I will archive this response. I also have hip joint and muscle discomfort, but it seems to disappear as mysteriouly as it appears. Exercise helps. As someone who studied dance in early childhood through high school it could be just arthritis, similar to what athletic people get as they age due to flexion and extension movements. Best regards.

When surgeon operated he found the medius and minimus completely torn from bone. I was given a very large bulky brace to wear .. Ill fitting and not really protecting muscle repair so I ditched it. I’m just very careful how I walk… I am now using cane .. today ..1month!

Wonderful to hear how well you are doing! Also sad to hear that you had an ill-fitting brace, since there are better options out there. I think the issue is unequal training/experience amongst PT's and prosthetists who design/make/fit these braces. If you begin to have problems, it might be a good idea to ask for a referral to a prosthetist experienced in treating torn hip muscles, which are notoriously slow to repair.
Good luck as you heal.

I am 74, and I was recently diagnosed with a hip labral tear. I have been treating myself with heat and cold packs along with a tens unit to massage my hip. I have recovered 95%. The only time I have pain in my hip is if I do a lot of walking during the day while shopping. I am seeing the doctor this week to discuss options, but I think I do not need surgery since I have improved so much in the last 4 weeks.

Hi @tnldaniel and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your post to a discussion about hip muscle repairs so you can connect with other members who have been through it. So glad you have found alternative ways to relieve the pain.
Did you do all this and recover in one month?

Yes, I recovered in one month. At the beginning, I could not walk without bending over at the waist because it was so painful to put weight on my hip.
