How do you cope with multiple chronic problems?

Posted by ashby1947 @ashby1947, Apr 18, 2022

Anyone have suggestions for how to cope with multiple chronic problems? It's hard enough to deal with any chronic pain, but what about when you have 3 or 4 different things going on most/all of the time I'm working on the various issues with the appropriate medical specialists, including a fine pain management doctor. Usually, I handle the pain well enough. However, with 3 or 4 on-going problems for days and weeks on end, I'm just exhausted dealing with the pain. I think we all agree that dealing with chronic pain (after whatever physical treatment can help) is mostly a mental focus. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I hope this is a good day for you, Sue

I want to add that I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 7 years ago. With calcium, vitamin D and food I’ve been able to turn that diagnosis around. A recent X-ray showed some bone growth, so that’s encouraging! Make sure your on a good calcium supplement! I used a power version and added it to smoothies, as well as a pill form when I wasn’t drinking smoothies! Sounds like you’ve got exercise down, that’s important too. I’m not sure what stage of osteoporosis you’re in, but don’t give up on nourishing your bones to help rebuild! It can happen, it did for me! Even my doctor was surprised!

kjs1964 Thank you, I have tried so many kinds of calcium, never power, but I have powder capsules now. I have been using D for about 20 years.
I know the number is important, but it is each person's body. We are all so different, and this is just one disease, a lot of people are dealing with many. I believe in the mind, body, and heart. I also think that our bodies are constantly changing and healing. Happy for you, and you work on healing yourself, a blessing.

SMRT (Spontaneous Muscle Release Technique) is a newer massage therapy that you might look into. It is less painful that myofascial and there are practitioners out there.

@kjs1964 Thanks regarding the information ON SMRT - I never heard of it. Always good to hear about new therapies.
Have a good day.

As you're all sharing helpful books, I thought I'd mention this book from Mayo Clinic.
- Mayo Clinic Guide to Fibromyalgia https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/shop/health-conditions-books/mayo-clinic-guide-to-fibromyalgia/

Has anyone read it and found it helpful?

Hi
Very happy you have found something that works for you. If you are able I would certainly appreciate specific information describing the CBD and gummies as well as the topical you use. I have pain coming at me from 4 sources and my new pain mgt. Dr who replaced my old Dr is MME driven and operates out of fear first rather than care first. Whilst I understand why he is so afraid of violating CDC guidelines for prescribing opiates but at the end of the day understanding doesn’t do me much good regarding my pain management
Thank You

I also would so appreciate more information on the CBD and gummies. I have had chronic widespread pain for 4 yrs since I contracted Bacterial Meningitis. I have no quality of life anymore. I have yet to try the CBD or gummies though I have looked at many sale sites, I am just not educated about them enough to know which purchase to make and from who especially since they are a little expensive and I worry I’ll get the wrong product and/or it won’t help me.

I am also dealing with multiple problems starting with juvenile arthritis since my teens to the latest four surgeries where part of my colon removed and I got sepsis and almost died.
I was addicted to opioids for 9 months but had the support of my caring doctor who went on writing me lessening prescriptions as I weaned myself off using various CBD products. I went through a dozen tinctures until I tried Tommy Chong's day & night formulas. They use nano technologies and work well. A little spendy but once you are on the mailing list he has frequent 30% off sales and I stock up then.
I also use a cream/lotion from Nightingale in Portland, OR. This is a great combination of CBD, no THC but also has MSM and about a dozen pain soothing herbs. Nightingale Remedies CBD. Also spendy but try one and if it works for you there are discounts for buying 3 or 6 at a time.
I've tried a lot of gummies and my favorites are from Gron.(Supposed to have an umlaut over the "o" but don't know how to do that on this keyboard.) They make gummies in varying flavors with varying amounts of THC--I use the pomegranate one. These are not expensive. What I've read is CBD works better with a little THC included and that seems true for me.
I'm not a medical practitioner, just a patient, so I am only saying what works for me after a lot of experiments. I only use the gummies when I am really bad, but use the tinctures and lotion every day. Takes about 4 or 5 pumps on each joint that is aching and rub it in good.
Don't know where you live but hope you can find these and they help.

You’re absolutely right about our combination of conditions and how different these conditions can be for each of us. Living with pain especially, has made me feel alone in my struggle and isolated. My activity level changed and I stopped being able to do things with friends and family. As much as I’ve learned about self care, etc. I still have difficult days. After a hysterectomy in 97, my hormones went crazy and I was diagnosed with hypothyroid and depression. I had a couple back injuries prior, after working in the (plant) nursery business for many years. Then fibromyalgia in 03 after a head on automobile accident, but I had symptoms before the accident I just didn’t know what was going on. I was diagnosed with ddd. As my back has deteriorated, I’ve had a lot of pain but couldn’t always distinguish where my pain was coming from with fibro. After a back X-ray, I found out what’s going on there. Now a pain doc wants to do facet joint injections in my lumbar spine for nerve compression. I had a colonoscopy on Thursday, I have tortuous colon. After not being able to go for 11 days, I ended up at the emergency dept. I’ve spent the last 2 months waiting for an appointment with my gastroenterologist. Now this diagnosis!
I educate myself on what to do and how to best handle these different diagnosis. Obviously you have too, I commend you for that! Are you able to get out for walks or any exercise? That can be a big challenge with pain.

I haven't had much success with either of the medications you menetioned. I am have now arranged to try a spinal stimulator. I have reached a point where I am not getting much relief from any medications. So, I am hoping and praying the spinal stimulator works as advertised.

Thanks for sharing this info. I made a note of your sources and will take a look. I’ve used CBD w/THC and just purchased a muscle cream on fridabotanicals.com. Also an Oregon made product. I haven’t had a lot of success with gummies but will look on Gron. I think the trick is finding quality products! There are so many options out there. I appreciate you sharing what works for you!
