I don't eat any fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts, high fiber also the only meats I eat are fish chicken and hamburger. Also you should eat small amounts several times a day. I drink Ensure and I just started something called Juice Plus. You can get all your vegetables and fruits in either capsule form or gummies. I chose gummies because the capsules might be hard to digest. I have had a gastric pacemaker since 2012 and it has helped so much! Hope this info helps. Kathy
@@katmandu, @justinmclanahan, thanks for the quick response. Yep, i know about the frequent small meals im supposed to eat, but i haven't figured out how that's supposed to fit in with weight loss. I need to lose about 50 # to be healthy. But i have hypothyroidism too. What happens is i sometimes forget to eat because im not really hungry during the day. But when dinner comes along im ravenous and eat too much. Last night i made a pig of myself and i felt like i had eaten two basketballs. lol. I have no energy, 0. Im majorly depressed, but i try to stay in contact with people. It helps my mood. Im thinking about using protein pwder in some kind of liquid. @katmandu, how is the Ensure? I heaved at the taste of Glucerna. Am also wondering about baby food. Ive got to lose wt. I would like to be thinner one more time before i die. Btw, my heart is fine but i still feel like death is near.
Oh I feel your pain. I take antidepressants but I can't take time released ones. I have to take one twice a day that is a fast acting one. It does help my depression which comes along with being sick. I was sick and nauseated 24/7 for 4 yrs before I got a diagnosis. I'm like you I don't always feel like eating so that's why I drink Ensure. I prefer the dark chocolate Ensure plus, it's not bad but I make myself drink it. I did quit smoking after my pacemaker was implanted but was so miserable because like you I put on a lot of weight and was miserable, so I started smoking again and lost weight. I know that's not good either but I was so depressed. Please don't give up I'll be 62 in a week and I'm still hanging in there, have you considered getting the pacemaker? Kathy
@katmandu, hi! No dr has ever mentioned it to me. Is it reverseable? Besides it making me sick, you know what i hate most of all? My bloated, distended belly. And if i dont eat it doesnt get so bloated. Its always going to be big i guess but the first part of me to enter the room is my stomach. It is so depressing to see all the cute clothes i could be wearing if it wasnt for my stomach. I want to cry, but i cant. I feel like i dont have any tears left. And i can forget about men. Sorry to turn morbid.
My dog is trying to get my attention by being naughty. Hes so cute, my littlest angel.
Thank you so much for responding. I will try some of the things you suggested. Feel free to write any time. I enjoy talking to people.
Love to you, Judy
Judy, the pacemaker is implanted under the skin next to your stomach and has leads leading to the stomach to make it work. It has a battery that the Dr can turn up or down to adjust your nausea. Kind of like a heart pacemaker but for your stomach. Your stomach bloat is probably from eating gassy foods so watch eating certain foods like cauliflower, broccoli which you shouldn't eat at all. If you can eat creamy peanut butter that's a good source of protein and also hard boiled eggs. I can handle them ok. I had a nissen fundiplication also and a pylori plasti done when they put in my pacemaker but I don't recommend that, it made my esophagus so tight I couldn't burp, belch or vomit. The Dr accidentally cut my spleen so I lost it also and now from losing it my immune system is compromised. I also have hypothyroidism and take synthroid, forgot to tell you that. Kathy
Hi,
I have just been diagnosed with Gastro paresis. I have had a nissen fundo and a redo the first was too tight. I also have a gallbladder removal. I have celiacs and allergies to milk and fish. I was recently diagnosed with Gastro. after a EGD to check on ulcers and dilate my Nissen. The Dr. found food left from the evening before, which was about 14 hrs since I had last eaten. At my follow up he really had no answers. When asked about he pace maker, he told me if I wasn't diabetic and wasn't vomiting, which I cannot do to the wrap. I was not a candidate and he did not suggest the meds for this condition. I feel like this has been going on for quite some time and has gotten to the point it is now.
I have an appointment at Mayo the end of Sept. I just have lost hope, I have had stomach issues since 2009. I feel like Drs have done things to just cover the symptoms and not the root cause of my issues. I am not sure if I will be helped at Mayo or not. I live in Idaho and am going to Minn., so there is quite an expense involved. They asked I stay 5-7 days, so the rental car, hotel ect. it all adds up. I do not mind the expense if they can help me. I have tried eating small frequent meals, the only thing that does not just hang around forever is liquids.
Sorry this is so long, just trying to make sure I include all the crazy things I have going on. I was so healthy until 2009 when I received a flu shot. Ever since then my life has drastically changed. I am 5'4" and weight around 125. I have lost about 10 lbs in the last month. And am as active as I can be right now.
If you can give me some hope or answers I would so appreciate it.
Hello @debnjay,
Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to read about your struggles, and we're so glad you've joined us. You’ll notice that I moved your message to this discussion group where members are talking about living with gastroparesis. I encourage you to click VIEW & REPLY in the email notification, and read through the past and recent posts, where you’ll meet @danybegood1 @jlfisher56, @robatk17, @katmandoo, @delicht, @nanny23 and others.
I'd also like to invite our Mentor, @kdubois as she has extensive experience with nissen fundoplication, and can share her insights about the procedure.
If it gives you any reassurance, I'd like to mention that Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has been recognized as the best Gastroenterology & GI Surgery hospital in the nation for 2017-2018 by U.S. News & World Report – you will be in good hands.
@debnjay, I'd also encourage you to read this Mayo Clinic News item, https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/stomach-muscles-working-incorrectly-can-lead-to-gastroparesis/, which states the "three main known causes of gastroparesis: diabetes, surgery and medication." Have your doctors ruled out any of these as a probable cause for your stomach issues?
@I have been diagnosed with slow gastric emptyiing at a moderate level. The diet is extremely restrictive.I also have had constipation issues for years. This has been worse since having a small bowel obstruction 18 months ago.I have added fluids but am not supposed to eat more than 10 grams of fiber a day and no fresh fruits or vegetables, beans and onlyfew cooked vegetables are allowed. Also no fiber supplements.
I’m confused about the Gastroparesis diet I was given when diagnosed last fall because a bezoar was found in my stomach. The diet is very similar to the one that Mayo has posted under Gastroparesis. My first question is about vegetables. The diet says no raw vegetables (of course) but well cooked vegetables are okay.
But the next entry is to avoid fibrous vegetable such as broccoli.
Does this mean that I can’t eat broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnip greens, spinach, green beans, etc. even if I cook them to death?
Great question Danyl,
I would like to invite @jlfisher56, @robatk17, @katmandoo, to this discussion as they have mentioned gastroparesis on Connect and may have some ideas about diets and foods that help. I would like to also invite some members from the past back to give an update with their gastroparesis. I hope @sherry8034 and @faycarole will join us in this discussion on gastroparesis.
@danybegood1, how are your currently doing with your diet? Does anything in particular seem to make your symptoms worse? Was a new diet suggested or is it something you want to try and are curious about?
