Foot neuropathy (numbness and pain) after total knee replacement (TKR)

Posted by norby @norby, Nov 26, 2018

I had a right total knee replacement 10 weeks ago and came out of surgery with numbness and intermittent pain on the bottom of my right foot. However, I do have good motor function in that foot. The knee has been healing and with PT, movement is on track, but the foot is a major challenge. The foot pain at times is worse than any from the knee. I have been able to generally manage the foot pain with gabapentin. My surgeon believes this may resolve in time but may take from 6-12 months. However there is a possibility that it will never go away. Has anyone else experienced foot neuropathy following knee replacement? If so, what was your experience with it?

I’m almost 6 weeks post TKR. I’m still having lots of difficulty sleeping (pain seems to increase after I go to bed), so thought that I would check here for some advice. First, it seems that I’m very lucky and had a great surgeon; I have 120+ degrees movement less than 4 weeks after surgery and have had none of the problems so many of you have had. And second, it seems that I’m just being impatient and this is normal. I’m going to start taking my pain meds more often (I’ve only been taking them after the pain gets to 5+, and it seems I should be taking them sooner), and put a pillow between my knees when I try to sleep.

Thank you all for your comments; I’ve learned a lot. I hope that all of your problems get better.

Welcome @violaange, It sounds like your TKR went really well and you've been doing your daily PT exercises for ROM. Another thing that I wasn't doing at about the same timeframe post TKR was continuing with the icing and elevating the knee and my surgeon really let me have it at the follow up appointment. Fortunately I never had any real pain but I did have swelling so I went back and did what the surgeon told me to do with the extra icing and elevating.

Do you still have any swelling in the knee or leg?

Only a little; and more swelling inside the knee than outside (when it furls like the knee is as big as a soccer ball but it looks the same). I have a wonderful ice water machine (wrap around the knee and it circulates ice water) that I use daily which really helps with both the pain and swelling. I’m actually sitting in my recliner now with it on.

No swelling in the leg and everything looks like it is healing nicely. I’m just so tired all of the time, which depresses me and is very frustrating.

I must say you are doing awesome….. your range of motion I would like a little of that lol ……, and I am over 7 months out ….. I like most people found night time to be painful I don’t know why that is ….. but I took tramadol at night to help for while also slept with my leg elevated for many weeks along with cold water circulation…that also helps with pain ….. I have learned with the recovery struggles to give myself a break…,,, and when I really starting to get down about this whole recovery process…..trust me I have many moments especially with this long recovery….., I go to pt or mfr massage I complain about my pain or my frustration about my recovery not moving along ….. but by end of session I leave frustration there …., trust me does not work all the time but I do my best each day …..you are doing so good physically but sounds like your not sleeping so well because of pain ….. one other thing I tried was melatonin….. I also had trouble sleeping I tried it worked great said take two I took one I was sleeping again all night ….,,good luck

Thanks for the kind words. I had a great PT before surgery who helped me prepare; recovery seems to have gone much quicker and I give all credit to the PT. I have already taken my Tramadol and am going to bed shortly. I’ll pick up some melatonin later this week when I go shopping … is there a particular brand that you recommend? Hope you get better soon.

My TKR was not because of arthritis, it was because I tore my ACL and PCL, partially tore the LCL and meniscus and fractured the tibia (tripped over my cat getting out of the shower). So we tried a few months of PT to see if it could heal, which it couldn’t. But it did prepare me for the surgery, I think.

I have been dealing with debilitating foot pain in my right foot after RTKR 2 months ago. I saw a foot specialist today, referral from my surgeon, he basically told me it’s damage caused by the nerve block. It may get better over time, or it may not. It’s changed my life, not for the better. The foot doctor is prescribing large dose gabapentin and said I should call my surgeon for a referral to pain management or anesthesia (?). And that was that.
I will take the medicine and remain hopeful. I try to ignore the pain as best I can to continue doing what I love, but it’s fair to say I am feeling quite depressed.

Good evening @phigg, I am sorry to read that you are still dealing with foot pain. When we connected in March, medical cannabis was discussed as an opportunity for your foot pain. Were you able to find a source? If so, what did you choose and at what dosage? I also wanted to follow up with you on finding an MFR therapist. I think that is because I just had my feet worked on today. And that is so that I can drive my car. Do you need some help along the way?

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.

Good morning! I had severe burning after the numbness went away. I'm also 10 weeks post TKR. My foot is getting better and and I also take Gabapentin 200mg at bed time. Nerve recovery is a very slow process...hang in there! Keep doing your excercises no matter what the symptoms are...I know that is key. I'm going to the gym now on my own. It is a struggle but we can't give up. I wish you well.

Thank you. I haven’t checked out medical cannabis as yet, I have used a delta 8 indica product that helps me sleep and I take full spectrum CBD daily. And the gabapentin which I’ve just started taking seems to be helping, we’ll see! I am going to pursue a MFR therapist. I live by the beach in NC and hope to be taking my dog on long walks in the sand again.
