The reason that was happening to me was because of spinal cord compression from a collapsed disc and bone spurs that were pushing into my spinal cord. I had spine surgery that fixed this and decompressed the spinal cord. If your wife has not ruled out a possible spine problem, it may be worth it for her to see a neurologist or spine specialist. This kind of problem can sneak up on you from an older injury and may not be causing pain, but can cause permanent damage and can put a person at risk of paralysis. Problems like this are best addressed before permanent damage happens.

Shocks are usually nerve pain from compression somewhere. A neurologist can do testing to figure out where that may be happening. It could be in the body in peripheral nerves or in the spine and could create similar symptoms. I'm glad your wife has found something that helps her sleep, although it sounds like no one has figured out the source of the problem. Would she consider an appointment with a neurologist?
