I can empathize with you. I've had the same problem with clicking jaw. My dentist wanted me to wear a bite guard but I wasn't very consistent with it. Unfortunately my tmj got worse and my jaw began to lock closed. One time it locked with my mouth open. It hurt and was awful. Eventually I had to have surgery. That was 20 years ago and I've had no problems since. My advice is to get a second opinion. But whatever you do, don't ignore it.
Is this something new? Do you have pain too?
I had terrible jaw pain and headaches many years ago and was diagnosed with TMJ disorder. I was in a graduate program and the stress and strain of school was affecting me to the extent that I was clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth at night. I was fitted with a bite splint (guard) by my dentist 20 years ago and I wear it consistently at night. It's sort of like a seat belt in a car. I "know" something is missing when I get in bed and haven't put my bite splint in. It's made a huge difference for me. You could also ask your TMJ physiotherapist about massage specifically for the TMJ.
